The Buckley School, an all-boys K-8 + Academy Year school, located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, is seeking an outstanding Lower School Spanish/Reading teacher for the first through third grade. Buckley students begin Spanish studies in first grade and continue through ninth grade, offering excellent preparation for language study in secondary school and beyond.
The Spanish and French programs are part of the school’s outstanding World Language department, which strives for all students to attain communicative proficiency upon graduation.

Hosting student clubs, supporting budding readers, breathing SEL into classes and transitions, and having family-style lunch with students are all hallmarks of the program and part of the faculty experience.
We are looking for a candidate who will recognize the unique opportunities afforded by an all-boys educational context, in addition to having a demonstrated passion for this content, this age range, and the art and science of teaching and learning.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Teach Spanish using a full immersion approach (90% target language)
Plan lessons using authentic literature, games, and songs
Use Total Physical Response (TPR) techniques and engage multiple modalities so students can retain information
Collaborate with colleagues to refine existing FLES program
Integrate Spanish language instruction with other disciplines
Teach two small-group reading groups.
Assess, monitor, and analyze student progress using formal and informal assessments.
Tailor reading instruction to the group and individual student needs.
Collaborate with classroom teachers to support differentiated literacy instruction.
Stay current with research-based practices and emerging trends in reading education.
Required Skills/Abilities:
At least 3-5 years of Spanish teaching experience with Grades 1-3 and a passion for language education
In-depth knowledge of the Spanish language and best practices for effective instructional approaches
The ability to foster a love of learning the Spanish language in a joyful and rigorous classroom
Excellent communication and academic technology skills
Undergraduate degree in Spanish or a related discipline, and a master’s degree in Spanish, the teaching of Spanish, or a related field, are preferred, though candidates with relevant experience and who do not match that degree profile will be considered.
Ability and desire to collaborate closely with colleagues within and across grade levels; collegiality and adaptability are essential qualities.
Demonstrated commitment to professional development
Open to learning current research- based practices teaching early literacy instruction (grades-1-3)
