Capitol Hill Day School seeks a full-time 7th and 8th Grade Social Studies Teacher for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Students learn across subjects with an experiential curriculum that integrates not only academic subjects, but the arts, physical education, service learning, and technology. Through an extensive field education program, students take part in experiences beyond the classroom related to topics of study. Teachers collaborate in developing, planning, and implementing curriculum; school-wide, they create a spirit of camaraderie through their interactions with students, parents, and other members of the staff. Also essential to the School’s program is its commitment to diversity, ensuring that students from varying backgrounds, cultures, and learning styles learn from and with each other. Emphasis is placed on building a classroom community that respects each individual while teaching children how to become caring, engaged members of the group.

7th and 8th Grade Humanities is a two-year course rooted in a study of American Literature and American History from pre-colonization into the 20th Century. The course encompasses a wide variety of Social Studies disciplines besides history, including geography, sociology, economics, and civics, as well as English/Language Arts content and skills.  Heavy emphasis is placed on inquiry, discussion, and project-based learning, as well as the development of research, note-taking, and test-taking skills. The Social Studies teacher works in tandem with the English/Language Arts teacher to co-plan units of study; there is a mix of co-teaching and individual, discipline-specific teaching. As one member of a team of four “cohort leaders,” the Social Studies teacher serves as a student advisor and helps ensure the smooth functioning of the weekly schedule in 7th and 8th Grades.  

Requirements

Master’s degree and/or extensive experience teaching social studies at the middle school level; understanding of child development and experience working with a range of needs and abilities.
