Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in north Seattle, Washington, is currently recruiting for a part time (0.8 FTE), long-term substitute Middle School Human Development & Health Teacher. The aim of the Lakeside Human Development & Health department is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to care for themselves, care for others, and care for their communities. To achieve these aims, our curriculum works to empower middle and high school students to develop self-awareness, awareness of others, the ability to seek accurate information, effective communication, age-appropriate identity fluency, proactive and reactive decision-making that enhances well-being, and community building.
Our curriculum focuses on the following key elements:
Identities, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability status, socioeconomic status, and age
Identity in community, including topics such as inclusion, equity, power, privilege, prejudice, and discrimination
Relationships, including topics such as friendships, romantic relationships, communication skills, and consent
Emotional health, including topics such as mental health, coping skills, and suicide prevention
Physical well-being, including topics such as sleep, nutrition, puberty, substances, and sexual health
Positive psychology practices, such as mindfulness, gratitude, and goal-setting
This position reports to the Human Development & Health Department Head and will join a highly collaborative and diverse cross-divisional department.
Responsibilities Specific responsibilities for this position include:
Teach six sections of Middle School Human Development;
Participate in the work of the Middle School Human Development sub-department and the 5-12 Human Development Department on innovative and inclusive curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment;
Build a culture of equity and inclusion within health education, emphasizing that there is no one “right” way to be healthy;
Center identity and skills related to communicating across similar and different identities as a cornerstone for all positive relationship-building;
Provide academic support for students outside of class time as needed; and
Attend Human Development department meetings and meetings with Human Development teaching teams
Act as an advisor or co-advisor to students and serve on a grade-level team;
Participate in the life of the school community including outdoor trips, field trips, and service-learning days;
Actively engage in professional development both in pedagogy, content area and diversity, equity and inclusion work.
Requirements and Qualifications A successful candidate for this position will meet the following requirements and qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree;
Teaching experience and/or facilitation experience with a diverse group of adolescents, preferably with students in middle school;
Excellent classroom management skills, including demonstrated ability to facilitate inclusive and engaging discussion amongst adolescents;
Strong understanding of and appreciation for the opportunities and challenges of adolescent social, physical, and emotional growth and development;
Demonstrated understanding of the primacy of identity in healthy development;
Strong cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the perspectives and lenses they bring to interactions;
Demonstrated ability to interact respectfully with cultures and experiences other than their own, and cultivate meaningful relationships with colleagues and students across differences;
Able to interact with pre-adolescents and adolescents in ways that foster trust and respect, encourage thoughtful reflection, and open and honest dialogue about sensitive and personal topics;
Ability to be flexible, organized, and to manage time effectively;
Collaborative and possesses excellent listening skills;
Embraces a growth and learning mindset, is committed to lifelong learning, and has a passion for constant curricular innovation

Salary and Benefits Salary Range:$28,955 - $51,260 based upon experience and education.
