Ojai Valley School is a pre-kindergarten to grade 12 boarding and day school located on two campuses in Ojai, California. The Lower Campus serves students in grades PK-8 and the Upper Campus serves students in grades 9-12.
Summary
The School Nurse reports directly to the Headmasters and Administrative Nurse, and under their direction, is
responsible for assisting with the operation of the Health Center. The ideal applicant for this position will have training or understanding of child development and social-emotional learning.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintains and updates student health records.
Assesses student and staff injuries and illnesses.
In coordination with other school nurses, carries the school’s “on-call” cell phone Monday-Thursday 4pm-8pm to respond to afterhours emergencies. Provides phone triage within 30 minutes and responds in person within one hour of the initial call, if required. A monthly schedule will need to be created and provided to the Head of Campuses.
Reviews, maintains and updates student health records, especially for the start of the Fall school year and Summer Camp in coordination with other school nurses.
Arrange medical evaluations by physicians, nurse practitioners, psychologists, psychiatrists or medical specialists for students and staff as needed.
Aids in the transportation to and from medical appointments.
Accompany students, when necessary, to medical appointments.
Schedules follow-up treatment and rehabilitation.
Corresponds extensively with parents/guardians on any medical issues concerning their child.
Maintains a well-stocked and prepared Health Center.
Provides first aid kits and medical releases for all camping, backpacking, and field trips.
Participates in identification of unsafe student activity via health center visits/charting and notifies the Head of Campus. Participates and/or provides feedback to the Safety Committee regarding these findings.
Assists Athletic Department with injury prevention.
Participates in dorm, faculty, and division meetings.
Reports pertinent information to the appropriate staff or department.
Documents student and staff medical information clearly, accurately and legally.
Procures and administers prescribed and over-the-counter medication.
Prepares medication for OVS staff to administer.
Assumes designated role in the event of a fire or disaster.
Maintains professional standing through required continuing education to increase professional competence and to meet personal needs and goals.
Assess students before school if a Dorm staff member has informed them that they are ill to see if they will need to be sent to Lower Health Center for further monitoring (As needed. This is case by case).
Works on filing, charting, updating protocols, scheduling and preparing for Summer/Next school year during scheduled campus breaks.
Educates students and staff on those subjects related to health and wellness.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing from four-year college or university preferred; minimum of one-year clinical experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and
procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of parents or employees of the organization. In addition, the following communications are required.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or
schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid California Nursing License issued by the California Board of Registered Nurses
BLS or CPR Certificate
California Driver's License required.
