Teaching Responsibilities: We believe that good teachers set high standards for their students and then do everything they can to help them achieve those standards. The Benjamin School seeks teachers to help our students become self-directed, independent learners with superior academic collegiate skills. The ideal candidate will be able to incorporate multiple teaching styles and use varied approaches with the students and material over a twelve-week long-term subbing period. This person must desire to work with students in a challenging, college-preparatory environment and possess strong interpersonal and written communication skills. Qualified candidates should demonstrate a broad-based intellectual curiosity, a passion for fostering confident lifelong learners empowered with the ability to interrogate texts and to think and write critically, the ability to facilitate inclusive academic discussions and debates with diverse points of view, the ability to work within a team, the skills and desire to engage and inspire students in the pursuit of learning, an understanding of the various roles that an independent school teacher must assume, a commitment to ongoing professional development, and a sense of humor. The person filling this position will teach Intro to World Literature (Grade 9) and Western Literature (Grade 11). In addition, there may be additional duties, such as study hall, lunch duty, and Community block duty, depending on the needs of the Upper School.
General Professional Qualifications: The most desirable candidates will have the following background or comparable experience: > A bachelor’s degree in English or a related field is required; a masters degree is preferred; > Teaching experience in a rigorous, college-preparatory program at the Upper School level; > An ability and desire to teach and learn with peers in departmental and interdepartmental settings; > Experience integrating technology into the curriculum; > Demonstrated interest and experience in creating a student-centered learning environment; > Collegiality and a willingness to collaborate with colleagues on advancing the school’s strategic initiatives are essential; and > Interest and experience in interacting with students outside of the classroom in co-curricular activities: play and musicals, the arts, athletics, service work, etc.

From the moment middle school students in grades 6-8 arrive on campus, they are guided by a community of supportive educators passionate for teaching the early adolescent. Our exceptionally skillful and creative teachers are characterized by their commitment to the individual student's academic success. Our students excel beyond academics, earning visual, performing, and digital arts awards. A robust athletic program prepares an average of 20% of our graduates to pursue collegiate athletics each year. Benjamin alumni are currently playing in the NFL and MLB.
