The Position: What Will You Do & How Will We Collaborate?
Hillbrook School is seeking a full-time Lower School Music Teacher to teach music classes and participate in grade-level activities that support the student experience. This role’s primary teaching focus is on grades 1st-4th year-round, with some classes in 5-6th grades or another area of music/performing arts instruction based in your expertise and the school’s need. In partnership with other performing arts colleagues, you will lead students in building a foundational music education, fostering a love of music, and developing performance skills and confidence. You will plan and lead lower school performances including the annual Spring Concert, and other smaller exhibitions with the support of the Director of Performing Arts. In partnership with Middle and Upper School music and performing arts teachers, you will also have opportunities to support the refining and development of our music and performing arts program for our growing JK-12 community.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Actively participate in a collaborative employee culture that is committed to being at the leading edge of JK - 12th grade education.
- Instruct students in 1st - 4th grades, with age-appropriate strategies and activities, in music theory, rhythm, movement, harmony, and music appreciation
- In order to reach a full-time teaching load, teach in either 5-6th grade music classes (splitting with a colleague for different times or emphases of study) or other regular teaching duties within the music department. (Approximately 20% of this role’s teaching time will be determined in the hiring process, based on candidate expertise and the school’s needs, e.g. this might look like 5-6th grade band, instrumental classes or keyboard, choral, and guitar instruction)
- Design and produce an annual Spring Concert exhibition for students in 1st - 4th grade
- Collaborate with our other music, theater and performing arts teachers to develop the program arc of performing arts learning JK-12th and contribute to storytelling opportunities about our program
- Implement the school’s social-emotional curriculum, which is based on Responsive Classroom
- Occasionally collaborate with colleagues to design integrated, project-based experiences for Reach Beyond block
- Provide hands-on, inquiry-based teaching; manage collaborative learning groups; integrate technology into the curriculum
- Communicate and follow up on student progress, liaising with parents
- Collaboratively plan with, and sometimes co-teach with, colleagues across homeroom and specialist teams, and within the Performing Arts department, including the Jr Kinder and Kindergarten early music teacher, Middle School instrumental and choral, and drama teachers, and Resident Teachers, with a focus on differentiated instruction

For almost 90 years, Hillbrook School has been a junior kindergarten-8th grade independent school located on 14 acres of oak woodland in Los Gatos, CA - and in the fall of 2023, we opened the doors to the founding class of our high school. Qualifications
- Desire and ability to work in a collegial, highly collaborative environment
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching and learning in a diverse, dynamic, and progressive school community
- A commitment to anti-racism and demonstrated skill designing equitable and inclusive educational experiences and learning environments that incorporate themes of diversity and justice
- A love of elementary-age school children
- Demonstrated skills as a musician
- Expertise and experience teaching the Orff-Schulwerk (and/or Kodaly) method preferred
- Instrumental or band experience with upper elementary or lower middle school preferred
- Master’s degree and three years teaching experience in music or music education preferred
- A growth mindset, active sense of humor, warm personality, and excellent organizational and communication skills
- Demonstrated proficiency in developing and stewarding strong relationships with students and families
