7th-9th Grade Humanities Teaching Position
Burke Mountain Academy (BMA), a co-ed elite ski academy in East Burke, VT, is seeking a full-time humanities teacher for the 2025-26 school year. For over 50 years, BMA has championed ski racers chasing greatness, developing one of the world's premier ski racing programs.
BMA’s academic program is fully integrated with its athletic and cultural goals, supporting the growth of student-athletes through individualized learning. The program emphasizes critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, intrinsic motivation, and strong communication skills across all subjects to foster lifelong learning. Instead of traditional grades, faculty provide personalized written feedback narratives, focusing on each student’s progress and personal development.
The ideal candidate teaches a range of humanities courses at the middle and high school level, including middle school English and Social Studies and 9th-grade English, as well as supports young student-athletes with time management and communication skills. This position also requires coordinating with sending schools and families for winter-term students. Class sizes range from six to twelve students, designed to build strong relationships between students and staff. Due to our unique schedule, faculty are empowered to develop unique and creative curriculum for each course and share their passion for their subject matter with students. Successful teachers embrace flexibility and innovation in delivering academic content to athletes who frequently travel for ski racing.
BMA faculty members embody leadership, community, commitment, and tradition. They help student-athletes reach their full potential athletically and academically and uphold BMA's ethos, where hard work is paramount, risking failure is embraced, and building strong character takes precedence over achievements. Faculty love BMA's distinct, close-knit community and participate in a range of campus activities, including community meals in the dining hall, organizing student activities in the local area, joining workouts, traveling to training camps, participating in school traditions like the Green Mountain Run, and volunteering on race crew. Their dedication fuels the school’s signature camaraderie.
Teach 7th and 8th grade winter term English, social studies, and 8th and 9th grade full year English.
Design and deliver remote and in-person curricula.
Provide narrative-based feedback for students.
Participate in weekly faculty meetings and collaborate with a small faculty team to create project-based and experiential learning curricula across all courses.
Advises approximately four students.
Be an active participant in boarding school life and school initiatives.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education, English, History, or related field and at least one year of teaching experience.
Founded in 1970, Burke Mountain Academy is a private, college preparatory ski academy with a 30-acre campus on Burke Mountain. The school enrolls roughly 65 students in grades 8-12 and all students are competitive ski racers who balance a rigorous athletic and academic schedule. The school also hosts a thriving junior program as well as two post-graduate programs and has a relationship with an alpine ski racing program in Oslo, Norway. Each year, the size of the graduating class ranges between 15 to 20 students. Female/male enrollment is roughly equal and we have a significant cohort of international students.
With small class sizes and an individualized academic environment, Burke Mountain Academy encourages students to pursue lifelong learning. Since its founding, Burke Mountain Academy has provided narrative evaluations in lieu of grades. These are comprehensive, detailed, and candid. Specific attention is given both to academic competencies—particularly critical thinking, written and oral communication, and problem-solving—as well as character, such as collaborative abilities, self-direction, leadership, self-awareness, responsibility, curiosity and passion. We are in n...o way a “pass/fail” institution and we are reminded often by the lifelong success of our alumni that our evaluations incentivize a wider range of desirable characteristics than grades do. Additionally, we believe a community that promotes trust, respect, and responsibility over simply enforcing a set of rules provides the best environment for young people to flourish. This strong sense of community sets us apart from other institutions and it is present in everything we do.
The adults who find happiness at Burke Mountain Academy are those who are willing to learn how our school is a bit different and become outstanding team players within this special context. We have loads of time to enjoy ourselves here—it is a high priority for all of us—but there are also plenty of moments when the call goes out for all hands on deck. Given that Burke Mountain Academy is located on Burke Mountain, you will have almost daily opportunities to enjoy alpine or Nordic skiing in the winter, as well as a range of other snow sports, and we are adjacent to Kingdom Trails, a world-class network of mountain biking trails. Many of our staff and faculty also enjoy the ample access to boating and kayaking, hunting, hiking, and our high performance fitness center. Looking a bit further afield, East Burke is approximately 1.5 hours east of Burlington, Vermont, 2 hours south of Montreal, Canada, and 3 hours north of Boston, Massachusetts. If you love being active and outdoors, you will never want for options at Burke Mountain Academy.
