About the Organization Horizons at Greene Street Friends School Is a community-centered education program supporting students from the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. Horizons builds long- term partnerships with students, families, communities, and schools to create experiences outside of school that inspire the joy of learning. The main component of Horizons is a six-week summer program located on the campus of Greene Street Friends School, where students participate in academic, cultural, and recreational enrichment activities, including teaching all students how to swim. The six-week program is supplemented by a growing school-year program, where students participate in after school tutoring, community service, and cultural and celebratory events. Horizons at Greene Street Friends operates a proven model and is part of an affiliated network with over 70 Horizons sites serving students across the country.
Horizons at GSFS students range in age from PreK - 8th grade. For summer 2025, there will be 135 students in this program, with more than 20 staff members and additional volunteers.

About the Position An integral part of the Horizons at Greene Street Friends team, the Executive Director provides and maintains overarching leadership and accountability for distilling, communicating and advancing a clear, consensus-driven vision, while also achieving tangible outcomes in the areas of planning, budgeting, resource development, staff management, program, and community building.
This role serves as the face of Horizons at Greene Street Friends, working to build external- facing relationships to increase awareness of the program, expand partnerships, and position Horizons as a thought leader in the out-of-school time space.
Horizons at Greene Street Friends offers a strong community of support from committed families, and a collaborative Board in partnership with host school members, local community stakeholders and partner school representatives. As part of a national network, Horizons at Greene Street Friends’s Executive Director has access to professional development opportunities, peer-to-peer learning and collaboration, and programmatic and strategic guidance from Horizons Greater Philadelphia and Horizons National, the hub of the Horizons Network.
Key Responsibilities Program Leadership Oversee student recruitment and retention activities related to both summer and academic year programming, interacting with school principals, teachers, guidance counselors, and families as necessary Lead aspects of the summer and school-year program, including: o hiring and onboarding summer staff, currently 20 and program directors o serve as school principal during the six week summer program o oversee all aspects of Horizons at GSFS’s multi-faceted program, including curriculum, planning, implementation, and student assessment.
Organizational Leadership Partner dynamically with the Horizons at Greene Street Friends School Board, providing leadership and support to members and committees Prepare and monitor the program’s annual budget of roughly $450,000
Administer the preparation and submission of required data to Horizons National
Development and Marketing Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts from individuals, corporations and foundation for the organization ranging in size from $5,000 - $50,000. Serve as the face of Horizons, stewarding relationships with donors and participating in networking and speaking opportunities to raise awareness of Horizons Collaborate with the Board on fundraising strategy, including cultivation of new funding sources, and provide support for fundraising events Ensure effective gift recording and acknowledgement (donor database training available)
Skills and Qualifications Demonstrated success in leadership roles in a nonprofit setting, preferably in an organization with a focus on education, out-of-school time programming, or youth. Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build and sustain positive and respectful relationships, with a sense of cultural competency and experience with working with a diverse range of stakeholders. Familiarity with program administration, including operations, budgeting, and staff management. Experience leading fundraising activities, including donor relations and events. Demonstrated commitment to understanding how systems impact our families and communities we work with. Commitment to continual growth in understanding personal biases and role within societal systems.
Founded in 1855, Greene Street Friends School has operated continuously in central Germantown section of Philadelphia. The school’s curriculum emphasizes Quaker values, academic strength, and cultural competence. Greene Street graduates attend the top private and public magnet high schools, the largest percentage attending Central High School. Since the mid-1960’s the school has implemented a mission-based business model that prioritizes financial accessibility, with an enrollment of 45% - 55% students of color. Over the past twenty years, the school has doubled both in enrollment and campus size. Current enrollment is 320 students on a campus of three acres. The annual budget is $5M, no debt.
