Detroit Country Day School seeks a passionate Choir Teacher to join the DCDS community, a place where the arts play an integral part in students’ lives and are woven into our school’s mission.
The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and passionate vocal music educator who possesses a genuine love of mentoring and inspiring young singers.
Our studio facilities are college-quality, and opportunities abound to collaborate in the department and interdisciplinarily.
Essential Responsibilities
Plan and deliver engaging lessons that align with the school's curriculum and educational standards for multiple levels of choir.
The typical teaching load is presumed to be 5 classes each semester.
Additional stipended duties: serve as the vocal director of the annual musical each year; assist in band/orchestra festivals; oversee choral, solo, and ensemble festivals.
Upper School teachers advise 10 to 15 students.
Promote and support participation in various choir-related competitions throughout the school year, which may include leading overnight trips.
Create a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students feel comfortable expressing their thoughts, opinions, and questions.
Utilize a variety of teaching methods and resources to accommodate diverse learning styles and promote active participation.
Assess student learning through a variety of formative and summative assessments and provide timely feedback to ensure artistic and skill growth.
Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues to share information about curriculum, student progress, and any concerns or opportunities for improvement.
Collaborate with other teachers and staff members to enhance the overall educational experience for students.
Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and other relevant data in accordance with school policies and procedures.
Uphold high professional standards and adhere to the school's code of conduct, policies, and expectations for faculty members.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Music degree with emphasis on secondary or college choral music instruction. Masters, DMA, PhD preferred.
Minimum of three years’ choral ensemble teaching experience. Secondary or Postsecondary.
Commitment to excellence in teaching and musicianship.
Knowledge and experience in concert programming and program development.
Knowledge and experience in teaching Music Theory. Experience in teaching AP Music Theory preferred. Ability to teach AP Art History a plus.
The ability to contribute through teaching and service to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community.
Task-oriented, organized, and professionally adept with the ability to collaborate with fellow visual and performing art faculty as well as Performing Arts Center staff.
Ability and willingness to mentor students in club and/or advisory groups.

Detroit Country Day School’s facilities are situated in two locations approximately three miles apart and less than one half hour from the center of Detroit. The Upper School (9-12) and Middle School (4-8) share adjoining campuses in Beverly Hills, where the administrative offices, facility services, safety and security services, and the main arts and athletics facilities are located. The Lower School (PreK-3) is located nearby in neighboring Bloomfield Hills. The Detroit Country Day Upper School offers a strong and varied program that provides numerous opportunities for students to demonstrate their individual strengths and develop their potential. The rigorous college-preparatory program, which includes Honors and Advanced Placement courses in each discipline in addition to a diverse selection of electives, prepares students for college and beyond. In addition to a series of honors and Advanced Placement courses, students at Detroit Country Day Upper School may pursue an International Baccalaureate Diploma.
