Overview
The Kew-Forest School, a preschool through 12th grade, co-educational day school founded in 1918 in Forest Hills, NY, seeks an experienced part-time Middle & Upper School Computer Science teacher. Kew-Forest is proud to enroll an astonishingly diverse student body, including approximately nine percent of whom are international students. The Kew-Forest School seeks to promote diversity in its hiring process and is committed to building an inclusive community and culturally diverse faculty to work with our students and families. Middle & Upper School students study multiple facets of Computer Science ranging from exploring how the internet works, to circuit building with Arduino, to coding in Python, all with the aim of developing their ability to formulate problems, think creatively about solutions, and express a solution clearly and accurately. The Middle & Upper School Computer Science teacher will work with a range of student learners across multiple grades and preference will be given to candidates with strong independent school experience.
The Kew-Forest School is embarking on an exciting new chapter as it enters its 108th year of operation. The School is in the process of creating a campus master plan which will entail examining and making improvements to its current facilities, enhancing our students’ experience, and providing incredible growth, leadership, and professional development opportunities for our faculty. The individual who fills this position must be energetic, creative, imaginative, and thoughtful in their approach to curriculum and pedagogy, and will contribute substantially to the revamping of our Middle & Upper School Computer Science Program as the School enters its era of Kew-Forest 2.0.
The ideal candidate will have or be...
Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a computer science field;
Ability to deliver a comprehensive and robust computer science program for beginning, intermediate and advanced students in both Middle and Upper School;
Experience with International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP) preferred;
An understanding of and commitment to cultural competency and how to support a diverse student population, particularly through teaching an inclusive and varied computer science curricula;
A dynamic and flexible instructor who can reach, teach, and differentiate instruction for a range of learners;
Invested in designing courses and learning experiences that engage students in project-based learning and inquiry-based practices through use of presentations, research, projects, and hands-on activities;
A passion for mentoring ongoing student learning outside of the classroom;
Demonstrated commitment to professional development and lifelong learning, and be active as an educational professional in computer science fields or professional organizations;
A deep understanding of current trends in teaching and learning;
Ability to develop hands-on field trips around Long Island and the New York City boroughs;
Strong written and oral communication skills to effectively communicate with students, parents, and colleagues; and
A collaborative instinct to facilitate working with other teachers.
Salary Range
$46,000 - $85,000 per annum, commensurate with years of experience.
