Blue Ridge School is an all-boys, all-boarding college-preparatory school serving 180 students on a 751-acre campus situated along the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains. For the academic year 2025-2026, Blue Ridge School seeks a Director of Library and Digital Literacy. This role is a full time; 9 month position. The Director of Library & Digital Literacy will oversee all aspects of the library and integrate research skills and digital literacy into the school’s curriculum. This role involves collaborating with faculty, teaching research-focused classes, managing both physical and online library resources, and providing student support. As Blue Ridge School looks to strengthen its enrichment opportunities for students, this role will be imperative on the road to providing individualized student success and purpose.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a committed educator who is at their core, student oriented, collaborative in nature, willing to work with and support the teachers in their department and all departments, and has the ability to balance leadership and directives with teacher autonomy. Candidates should have:
Bachelor's degree required; Master's in Library Science or related field preferred.
Teaching experience and/or an Education degree are a plus
Three years of library program director experience.
Strong understanding of library resources, practices, and technology
Experience in curriculum design, coaching, or leadership is a plus.
Proven ability to collaborate effectively with faculty.
Enthusiasm for working with high school-aged boys
Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills
Familiarity with makerspace tools (ex: 3D printers, Photoshop, audio/video editing software) is a bonus, but not expected.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Partner with teachers and department chairs to incorporate research skills and ethical technology usage, including AI tools and open source research databases, into curriculum design.
Teach 2-3 classes focused on research skills, source analysis, citation methods, and library resource utilization.
Create a foundational digital literacy curriculum for students that includes strategies for searching for searching open-source research databases, evaluating source credibility, identifying source bias, citing sources accurately, and using collaborative tools for group work.
Assist teachers with classroom instruction and lesson planning related to research and online database usage, including co-teaching as needed
Assist students with utilizing library resources, including guiding them to find books or online resources that align with their interests, needs, and ability
Develop measurable, grade-level student outcomes for research proficiency
Oversee online databases, ensuring accessibility and relevance for students & faculty
Conduct library orientation sessions for students and faculty.
Maintain a welcoming and well-organized physical library environment conducive to reading, studying, and research.
Develop a physical collection of books relevant to the curriculum, student interests, teacher needs, and the school's mission.
Partner with academic leadership to provide knowledge and vision for the future success of the library and digital literacy programs
Manage the library's budget.
Coordinate library and makerspace usage by teachers for classes
Develop special activities and initiatives that highlight the library or love for reading
Manage the library’s book check-out system
Assist the Dean of Academics with supporting and overseeing seniors writing their Capstone Thesis and Individual Learning Projects
Coordinate, track, and monitor student progress in collaboration with teachers as appropriate.
Instruct and monitor students in the use of individualized learning materials and resources
Use relevant technology to support instruction
Manage student behavior in the classroom by consistently enforcing rules and procedures.
Prepare reports and update all necessary records accurately, completely, and timely as required by school policies regarding students’ behavior and academic achievement
Participate in department meetings, school meetings, and parent meetings
Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and student needs
Maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school
Participates on weekday and weekend duty teams
Participate in two seasons of co-curricular programming
Attends on-campus special events, such as Registration, Parents Weekend, Alumni Weekend, School sponsored mixers, etc.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 25% sitting, 25% walking, and 50% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
