St. Johns Country Day School seeks a performing arts teacher to join our outstanding arts faculty, leading all performing arts offerings and providing technical direction in our beautiful 600-seat Performing Arts Center. This full-time teaching position will embody vision and enthusiasm for developing a program that engages our students with all aspects of performance. We are especially seeking candidates with experience in fostering connections between music, theater, and broader cultural and community contexts. St. Johns’ Performing Arts Department is committed to the idea that all students are creative learners, and the educator’s role is to encourage them to expand their artistic skillset and engage with a breadth of creative experiences.
The ideal candidate will possess
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- A collaborative attitude and a desire to think creatively about the visual and performing arts
- A passion for teaching and engaging students in the performing arts
- An innovative approach to teaching and learning
- An articulated vision for a strong performing arts program at St. Johns and an ability to bring that vision to fruition
- An ability to connect with and inspire all grade levels, from age 3 through Grade 12
- Experience in some or all of the following:
- Dance
- Improv
- Electronic composition
- Theater, including acting and directing
- Technical Theater
Essential Duties
- Overseeing the St. Johns Performing Arts Center and maintaining the calendar, coordinating use and outside rental of the space, and managing all logistics related to both the performing arts and St. Johns
- Engaging in weeknight and weekend performing arts duties
- Maintaining a flexible mindset and an innovative approach to teaching
- Knowledge of educational technology; openness to innovation, willingness to learn, ability to integrate evolving IT into curriculum
- Offering opportunities for students to create and perform original student productions in addition to experience with and exposure to existing and established performances.
- Encouraging and fostering an appreciation for a diversity of texts and perspectives to build empathy and understanding of diverse characters and stories.
- Creating a balance between individual and collaborative student work.
- Making learning visible with opportunities for critique, feedback, and reflection processes with diverse approaches.
- Managing the classroom environment so that all students can learn safely and feel included.
- Communicating with students and parents in a clear, timely, and professional manner.
- Serving as a role model for students.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in music, theater, or related field; master’s degree preferred.
- 4+ years of teaching experience
- Performance and technical theater skills and experience
- Collaborative, public-facing, inquiry-based performing arts project creation and management
- Ability to devise techniques and experimental theater processes
- Film making, audio, and video recording and production skills
- Arts integration experience
- Basic musicianship
