OVERVIEW
The Maine School of Science & Mathematics, Maine’s STEM magnet school offering a challenging curriculum in a supportive residential setting, invites applications for a full-time Music Instructor. Since the School’s inception, Fine Arts have played a critical role in helping MSSM fulfill its mission of cultivating a new generation of well-rounded scholars who excel in their ability to develop, investigate, and express creative and substantive works with cultural, historical and emotional resonance. The heart of MSSM’s fine arts is a dynamic music program that enriches campus life and collaborates with artists and programs beyond Limestone. TheMusic Instructor not only continues this tradition, but operates with the discretion to expand and augment it according to their creative vision and the mission of the institution.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Music Instructor will be responsible for continuing to build a vibrant music program at the School: teaching classes and conducting various musical performance ensembles. Full-time faculty are also responsible for teaching a two-week January Term course, serving as an academic advisor, and advising one student club or activity.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Instruction: Teach up to four (4) high-quality, student-centered courses within the MSSM fine arts program;
- Music Program Direction: Oversee practice and performance for concert band, jazz band, and a vocal ensemble.
- Club Sponsorship: Club sponsorship duties are covered by work with musical performance ensembles;
- Advising: Serve as an advisor to a small group of students, acting as the primary point of contact between advisees' parents and the school;
- Communication: Communicate in a professional and timely manner to students and parents concerning student academic performance;
- Collaboration: Collaborate with a world-class teaching team, emphasizing shared objectives and connections; and
- Professionalism: Exhibit professionalism within and outside the program, acting as an enthusiastic cheerleader for Maine’s nationally-ranked, magnet high school.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- An M.A. in music or a related field;
- Experience with mentoring, instructing, and directing musicians of varied levels of mastery in individual and group contexts.
- Experience with instructing music theory, history, and production.
- Experience with program oversight and development, as well as collaboration with other professionals and programs
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
A terminal degree (M.F.A. or Ph.D.) in Music or a related field.
