Position Summary
Detroit Country Day Middle School is seeking a full-time, dynamic, and passionate Middle School Science Teacher to join our faculty. The ideal candidate will be committed to creating an inquiry-based, hands-on, and innovative science classroom that fosters critical thinking, curiosity, and a love of learning. This position requires a strong dedication to student success, effective collaboration with colleagues, and a deep understanding of the developmental needs of middle school learners in an independent school setting.
Essential Responsibilities
Classroom Management & Student Engagement:
Establish and maintain consistent expectations and routines to promote student responsibility and active engagement.
Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment with clear structure.
Build a strong sense of community within an Advisory group by mentoring students and maintaining effective communication with families.
Instruction & Curriculum Development:
Set clear teaching objectives and learning outcomes that are appropriately challenging and aligned with high expectations.
Deliver innovative, comprehensive, and content-rich instruction that promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Emphasize inquiry-based, hands-on instruction that encourages student-centered learning.
Plan and prepare lessons that ensure a balanced and well-rounded curriculum.
Effectively manage whole-class, small-group, and individual instruction with appropriate differentiating to meet the needs of all learners.
Assessment & Feedback:
Develop and administer both formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress.
Provide timely, constructive feedback to support students’ mastery of science content and scientific practices.
Maintain accurate records of student performance and communicate progress to students, parents, and administration.
Engage with families to support students’ academic, social, and emotional progress.
Collaboration & Professional Development:
Support the development and refinement of the science curriculum within the department.
Collaborate with colleagues and the department chair to ensure curricular alignment.
Actively participate in faculty meetings, professional learning opportunities, and school-wide events.
Stay informed on current best practices in science instruction and middle school pedagogy.
Take on additional responsibilities, such as coaching or leading extracurricular activities, as needed.
Athletic coaching and/or extracurricular activities are encouraged.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Education with a major in Science
Master’s degree preferred
State teaching certification with Science (DX) or Integrated Science (DI) endorsement preferred
5+ years of teaching experience
Strong classroom management and communication skills
Understanding of middle school developmental needs
Proficiency in integrating technology into instruction and using our learning management system effectively
A passion for teaching and inspiring a love of science in all students

Detroit Country Day School’s facilities are situated in two locations approximately three miles apart and less than one half hour from the center of Detroit. The Upper School (9-12) and Middle School (4-8) share adjoining campuses in Beverly Hills, where the administrative offices, facility services, safety and security services, and the main arts and athletics facilities are located. The Lower School (PreK-3) is located nearby in neighboring Bloomfield Hills. Both Beverly Hills and Bloomfield Hills are in Oakland County, which has the highest per capita income of any county in the state of Michigan and is one of the most affluent counties in the United States.
The Detroit Country Day Upper School offers a strong and varied program that provides numerous opportunities for students to demonstrate their individual strengths and develop their potential. The rigorous college-preparatory program, which includes Honors and Advanced Placement courses in each discipline in addition to a diverse selection of electives, prepares students for college and beyond. In addition to a series of honors and Advanced Placement courses, students at Detroit Country Day Upper School may pursue an International Baccalaureate Diploma.
