Position Summary
The PAC Assistant Technical Director supports the planning and execution of all technical services. Working closely with the PAC Technical Director, this role assists with PAC oversight and management. This position is ideal for someone with strong interest in technical theatre who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative school environment. This position will report to the Performing Arts Department Chair.
Essential Duties
Assist the PAC Technical Director with coordinating all technical services for the School and outside rental events that occur in the Performing Arts Center and Eisenberg Studio Theatre
Create and implement theatrical sets, scenic properties, lighting, projection and/or sound designs for DCDS Performing Arts productions
Assist with training, coordinating, and supervising student crews to implement designs and operations for all DCDS Performing Arts productions
Train & supervise student Stage Managers throughout the production process, from auditions & rehearsals through tech week and performances and follow-up with post-show evaluations. (Includes attending rehearsals 1x per week to observe & mentor SMs in rehearsal)
Responsible for the setup, operation, and clean-up of equipment and associated event elements for all School and outside rental events that occur in the Performing Arts Center
Assist in coordinating and supervising any additional technical staff and students as required for DCDS events and outside rental events, including the scheduling and implementation of set-ups, operations and tear-downs
Assume responsibility for the performance of all job duties in a manner to promote a safe and professional work environment and immediately report all preventable hazards and unsafe equipment and practices to administration
Occasionally assist with audio/video projection for special events not occurring in the PAC as requested
Perform clerical duties as necessary, including follow-up communications for PAC event details, use of Google workspace, filing and copying tasks
Conduct special analyses and projects as assigned and prepare reports detailing findings for review
Maintain an efficient working space that is clean, safe and unobstructed
Conduct preventive & repair maintenance on PAC equipment and inventory as needed, ensuring optimal operations of PAC facilities and equipment
Maintain files and event details that are organized and current
Maintain and improve technical knowledge by researching equipment, software, safety protocols and current technical theatre operations in addition to attending occasional classes or seminars made available by the School
Perform related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Bachelor degree in Theatre with emphasis on technical direction/theatrical design/stage management and/or five years related experience; preferably in an educational or youth focused environment
Knowledge of set construction and removal, theatrical rigging, lighting, sound, video, computers and other equipment as required for stage production, events, and activities
Proficient in the design and implementation of at least two of the following technical theatre areas: Set (CAD drafting preferred); Lighting (ETC consoles); Sound (QLab or similar) and/or digital mixing for live performances; Projections; Scenic Properties; Costumes; etc.
Ability to work independently to carry out assignments
Knowledge & experience in Stage Management roles and functions for theatre rehearsals and performances. (Stage Management experience for live events is a plus.)
Task-oriented and ability to follow rigid work instructions in a structured environment with the capacity to deal with non-routine matters such as special projects with minimal specific instructions
Strong project management skills including the ability to lead and mentor a crew of students and staff
Excellent communication skills and the ability to interface with students, families, employees, and external event clientele
Ability to read and interpret a variety of directives furnished in written, oral or diagram form including safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Familiarity with Microsoft Windows & Google Workspace products including database, spreadsheet applications and word processing software; experience with Computer Aided Drafting programs (WYSIWYG, Vectorworks, SketchUp or AutoCAD), playback software (QLab, SFX, etc.) and sound Production Software (Cubase, ProTools, Tracktion) is a plus
Evening and weekend availability is a must.

This position may require the employee to regularly sit, stand, talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Work Environment
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly indoors. The environment can be consistently loud, especially during live performances, and when operating or testing audio, lighting, or stage machinery. Noise may come from amplified music, microphones, and set construction tools.

Detroit Country Day School’s facilities are situated in two locations approximately three miles apart and less than one half hour from the center of Detroit.
