Job Summary: Responsibilities include

Teaching a required seminar class for ninth graders with the goal of helping students develop their social literacy. This class explores the topics of self and society by helping the students transition to high school, looking at identity through a critical lens, focusing on race, gender, sexual orientation, class and more in the first semester. In the second semester, topics pertaining to sexual health, healthy relationships and well-being are taught.

Depending on qualifications, the person in this position may teach 10th grade seminar classes focused on issues of mental health and wellness (anxiety, positive psychology, mindfulness, etc.).

Additional opportunities exist to co-teach ethnic, cultural, and gender studies, intergroup dialogue, and other elective courses for older students.
Job Responsibilities: Full-time teaching involves the equivalent of 4-5 major classes (or 8-10 minor courses) each semester and leading an advisory group of 10 students. Additional responsibilities include supervisory duties, attendance at department and school-wide meetings and functions, and other duties as assigned by the division principal.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate would be comfortable working with students on various critical topics (e.g., equity/diversity and social justice education, health education, social sciences, etc.) and has experience doing this work with high-school aged students. A person who is a strong team player and collaborator, dedicated to the social-emotional and civic development of high school students, and dedicated to the growth of the department would be a strong addition to the team. Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred, plus 2-5 years prior teaching experience and/or experience working with young people. Familiarity with independent schools is a plus.
In addition to teaching, our faculty members are involved in a variety of activities outside of the classroom that are part of a Dwight Englewood School education. Interest in athletic coaching or leadership of co-curricular activities is an important qualification in the hiring process. Coaching opportunities exist in a variety of sports at the Middle and Upper School levels.
