Position Title: Maker Space Manager Department: STEAM Initiative Reports To: Head of School Employment Type: 10-Month, Full-Time (August 4 – June 6) Work Hours: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM Contract Period: August 4, 2025 – June 6, 2026 Contract Renewal: Renewable annually; next contract issued in March 2026 Position Track: Eligible for promotion to Maker Space Director within 2–3 years based on performance and program growth
Position Overview: The New York Military Academy (NYMA) is seeking a forward-thinking and highly organized Maker Space Managerto lead and grow our hands-on innovation lab—an essential component of our expanding STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) initiative. This is a management-level role that blends teaching responsibilities with leadership in strategic planning, resource management, and program development. While the position includes teaching two project-based classes in the afternoons, the majority of the role involves building the Maker Space program’s infrastructure, outreach, and future potential. The position is structured for growth and has a clear pathway to promotion to Maker Space Director within 2–3 years.
Key Responsibilities: Instructional Duties (Afternoons): Teach two hands-on, project-based Maker Space/STEAM classes daily to cadets in grades 9–12. Develop interdisciplinary curricula focused on engineering design, creative problem- solving, robotics, coding, and fabrication. Program Management & Strategic Development (Primary Focus): Provide daily oversight of the Maker Space, including scheduling, maintenance, safety, and accessibility.
Collaborate with Math and STEAM faculty to support integration of Maker Space resources across departments. Coordinate student involvement in STEAM competitions, fairs, and external showcases. Plan and host an annual NYMA STEAM Showcase to highlight cadet work and community engagement. Curriculum & Staff Development: Lead efforts to enrich the Maker Space curriculum, exploring new elective pathways and student project opportunities. Organize faculty and staff training sessions to promote use of the Maker Space and ensure proper handling of equipment and software. Serve as a resource for internal professional development in STEAM and project-based learning. Operations & External Partnerships: Develop and manage the annual Maker Space budget, ensuring proper allocation for equipment, materials, and maintenance. Coordinate with outside vendors for repairs, supplies, technology integration, and training partnerships. Seek and support grants and external funding to expand program offerings and technology resources. Assist in the hiring and supervision of future Maker Space staff as the program grows.
Qualifications: Required: Bachelor’s degree in Education, Engineering, Technology, Design, or a related field Strong leadership and organizational skills, with experience managing projects or programs Demonstrated technical expertise in areas such as 3D printing, laser cutting, CAD software, electronics, or fabrication tools Passion for project-based learning and empowering students through hands-on exploration
Strong communication and collaboration skills Preferred: Experience teaching at the secondary level or in a boarding/military school setting Familiarity with budget management, vendor relations, or grant writing Experience developing new programs or facilities in an educational setting
