Since 1915, Shady Hill, a school of approximately 530 students (PreK - Grade 8) and 90+ faculty, has been a leader in progressive education. Shady Hill is a deeply mission-driven school. We seek to develop independent, joyful and curious learners who respect their own accomplishments and those of others. We strive to be a community whose values are strong and whose teachers are unafraid to engage students in important questions. The school’s program allows children to explore their worlds and test their powers. As a school with a historical and contemporary commitment to social justice, we believe that an inclusive and equitable community is an educational and moral imperative that empowers us all. Therefore, we seek to hire teachers who demonstrate a mindset and skill set that prioritizes cultural competence, equity, and justice in their practice with students and in their work with colleagues.
About the position:
Shady Hill School is seeking experienced and skilled literacy tutors who hold Orton-Gillingham certification at the Associate Level or higher to work with students in Lower School (grades pre-K - 4) on a contracted, hourly basis. We are looking for educators who bring a student-centered, multisensory, developmentally responsive approach to reading instruction and can tailor support to individual learning needs. Tutoring sessions will focus on foundational literacy skills, including phonological awareness, decoding, encoding, and fluency. Tutoring sessions may be scheduled during the school day and/or after school, depending on student needs and tutor availability. This is an hourly, part-time position. This position is not eligible for benefits.
Instructional Approach:
Orton-Gillingham-trained tutors bring a range of instructional styles: some lean more formal and clinical, while others take a more flexible and relational approach. At Shady Hill, we are looking for a tutor whose practice reflects our commitment to child-centered, developmentally appropriate instruction. The ideal candidate brings warmth, adaptability and a deep appreciation for each child’s unique learning journey, creating a supportive environment where students feel seen, capable and empowered.
Primary Responsibilities:
Conduct one-on-one tutoring sessions with Lower School students
Plan tutoring sessions to meet identified learning objectives
Document tutoring session objectives, accomplishments and future goals
Collaborate with Learning Resources team and classroom teachers to identify, track, and remediate learning weaknesses
Provide updates on students’ progress and continued areas of focus with parents and teachers as necessary
Qualifications:
Orton-Gillingham certification at the Associate level or higher (Classroom educator certification alone does not meet the requirement)
3 - 5 years of prior experience supporting early literacy development in one-on-one or small-group settings
Strong understanding of structured literacy and the science of reading
Skilled at using multisensory, explicit, and systematic instruction to support reading, spelling and writing
Demonstrated success differentiating instruction to meet a range of learning profiles
Ability to design engaging, targeted lessons that build student confidence and foundational skills
Strong communication and collaboration skills
A demonstrated understanding of diversity and cultural competency through prior work with diverse populations
Able to build trusting relationships with students, families and teachers
Maintains a learner’s mindset and a problem-solving approach to new challenges
