The Upper School English Teacher will be responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in secondary English curriculum. The successful teacher will engage students in critical thinking, will foster a passion for literature, will refine effective writing skills, and will prepare students for academic success in advanced English courses. The role involves designing lesson plans, assessing student progress, and creating a supportive classroom environment.
Responsibilities:
Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the school’s requirements and expectations and show evidence of preparation as required, including but not limited to posting on the school’s learning management system
Implement relevant and authentic pedagogical strategies, while being mindful of diverse learning styles. Appropriately incorporate technology to enhance student learning
Keep abreast of current educational research, trends, and best practices to help inform the planning of instructional activities
Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits
Provide formative and summative assessments, offering clear and personalized feedback to support student progress
Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and is appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students
Manage student behavior in accordance with the student handbook
Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, administration, and teachers
Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents and community members
Engage actively with the Oakridge community by participating in events, providing support to students, and positively promoting the school in all communications
Other duties as assigned by the Division Head
Other Job Functions:
Attend all required meetings and perform assigned duties
Take all reasonably necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
Serve on committees as assigned
Physical Demands and Environment Factors:
Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing
Maintain emotional control under stress
Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks and other classroom equipment

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree
Three years of successful teaching experience in an Upper School setting
Must pass a criminal background check and have positive verification of references
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in English or a related field, preferred, with a strong understanding of English curriculum and pedagogy
Proven ability to effectively teach and engage students across diverse skill levels, including on-level, Honors, and Advanced Placement courses in reading and writing
