Overview
The Kew-Forest School, a PS-12 co-educational day school founded in 1918 in Forest Hills, NY, seeks an experienced Director of Learning Support to work with students and manage staff. The individual who joins our community to fill this position must be energetic, creative, imaginative, and thoughtful in their approach to learning support and managing learning support staff and prepared to contribute substantially to supporting students, faculty, and parents as the School enters its era of Kew-Forest 2.0.
The Director of Learning Support oversees academic interventions, coordinates specialized services, and ensures equitable access to learning for all students in grades PS-12. This role collaborates closely with Division Heads, faculty, and families to design, implement, and monitor support structures aligned with best practices in inclusive education.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Child Study / Response to Intervention (RTI) Leadership
Identify student needs through assessments, observations, and teacher referrals; develop and adjust individualized intervention plans based on progress monitoring.
Lead RTI meetings and support teachers in designing/delivering Tier 1-3 interventions; analyze data to refine strategies.
Provide direct instruction (1:1 and small-group) for Tier 3 students and those with learning differences.
Hire and supervise outside providers (e.g., SETSS, speech therapists), arrange schedules, and serve as the school’s liaison for:
DOE services (IESPs & 504s)
Parent navigation for evaluations/placements
Coordination with tutors, evaluators, and agencies
Representation at IESP meetings
Maintain systems for tracking intervention effectiveness and student progress, including formal/informal assessments.
Foster student agency through goal-setting, self-assessment, and study/organizational strategies.
Collaborate with Division Heads, Counselors, and College Counselor to align supports (e.g. testing accommodations) and track student progress.
Teacher Support & Collaboration
Coach teachers on instructional strategies (including differentiation, scaffolding, and inclusive practices) to support accommodations, modifications, and Approaches to Learning (ATL) skill integration.
Proactively address challenges by providing resources, modeling, or co-planning support.
Implement a structured meeting cycle to review student progress, refine interventions, and align support strategies (e.g. pre-year/mid-year planning).
Facilitate collaboration between classroom and single-subject teachers for cohesive student support.
Collaborate with Division Heads and the Kew-Forest Parents Association (KFPA) to organize parent education events.
Analyze and communicate assessment results to teachers, Division Heads, and families and lead ongoing training for teachers on data interpretation for instructional planning and goal-setting.
Professional Development
Conduct needs assessments to identify professional development priorities, particularly for supporting diverse learners.
Design and deliver PYP- and MYP-aligned professional development (e.g. workshops, study groups) on inclusive practices, executive functioning, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), differentiation, and progress monitoring.
Provide ongoing coaching, including classroom observations, feedback, and 1:1 meetings, to support implementation of professional learning.
Engage in continuous professional growth (conferences, peer networks) to stay current with best practices and share insights with staff.
Additional Responsibilities
Attend school events and meetings as required.
Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Head of School.
QUALIFICATIONS & ABILITIES
Extensive experience in early childhood/elementary education (ages 3–10), with expertise in cognitive, emotional, and social development.
Experience in middle and secondary education (ages 11-18).
Expertise in RTI, IEP/504 processes, and inclusive pedagogy.
Ability to build trust and inspire collaboration through active listening, respectful dialogue, and a clearly articulated vision for inclusive learning support—creating a welcoming environment for growth.
Strong organizational, communication, and data-analysis skills.
Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality.
Familiarity with IB PYP and MYP frameworks (preferred).
Salary Range
$60,000 - $110,000 (commensurate with years and depth of experience).
