The Speyer Legacy School seeks a dynamic, innovative, and passionate full-time Lower School Music teacher (K-4) who will inspire in young students a love and appreciation of music, and instill musical literacy through a variety of experiences including singing, listening, performing and playing classroom instruments. The candidate hired will report to the Head of Lower School and will be committed to collaborating with faculty and staff to create a learning environment in support of the school’s mission and curricular goals. The ideal candidate possesses creative problem-solving skills, enthusiasm for designing innovative curriculum, a positive attitude toward change, and strong interpersonal skills that allow one to cooperate and participate fully within the school community.
Duties & Responsibilities
A lead Music teacher who will:
Demonstrate a deep passion for Music education and a commitment to inspiring and engaging gifted elementary learners.
Design and implement vertically aligned, developmentally appropriate Music units and lessons for K–Grade 4, with a strong foundation in music theory and pedagogy for gifted learners.
Introduce and develop students’ music literacy skills, including reading, writing, and interpreting standard music notation through engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction, and introducing instrumentation when appropriate.
Eagerly collaborate with colleagues, across and within disciplines and divisions, to further develop curriculum and design interdisciplinary projects/units of study.
Differentiate instruction to meet a range of musical abilities and learning styles, nurturing students' potential and talents.
Foster healthy vocal development in young students through age-appropriate vocal techniques, exercises, and repertoire that support expressive and confident singing.
Infuse creativity and innovation in both curriculum and instruction that incorporates Music from different geographical regions, traditions, and cultures.
Establish and implement classroom procedures and routines, building a student-centered class community that focuses on belonging.
Assess and utilize information on students’ academic, behavioral, and social-emotional profiles to create responsive learning environments.
Collaborate with the Student Support Team to implement learning plans that meet the diverse needs of all students.
Communicate regularly and partner with families about classroom happenings and student progress, including writing student narrative reports that provide descriptions of students' profiles, interests, areas of growth, and needs within the discipline of Music.
Consistently demonstrate a passion for lifelong learning by inspiring both students and colleagues through curiosity, exploration, and a commitment to continuous growth.
Actively pursue professional growth rooted in individual and schoolwide goals, demonstrating an openness to feedback and reflection.
Participate in the school community, including faculty and committee work, and school duties.
Promote respect for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging as core values of the School, a shared responsibility in partnership with the school community.
Engage respectfully with students and families and demonstrate sensitivity to cultures, values, configurations, and beliefs.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Deep understanding of child development in musical, academic, and social-emotional domains, and within the context of gifted education, a plus.
Strong choral and piano proficiency, with prior experience teaching general music in a classroom setting.
Demonstrated classroom management skills, including allocating time, space, and materials for most effective and joyful learning.
Expertise in crafting culturally inclusive and developmentally appropriate music experiences that honor students’ identities and learning styles.
Versatility and flexibility both within and outside of the classroom, encouraging students to think creatively, work collaboratively, embrace failure with a growth mindset, and communicate effectively with others.
Outstanding interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
Desire to collaborate productively with a team of teachers.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education
Minimum of three years of music teaching experience with elementary-aged students
Training in Music Learning Theory or Orff Schulwerk
Strong understanding of vocal pedagogy for young voices
Proficient vocal and piano skills
Experience planning, leading, and conducting choral concerts
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States
Preferred
Training in Kodály and/or Dalcroze methodologies
Experience coordinating and collaborating with a creative team on student performances, including plays and musicals
Strong written and oral communication skills
Excellent planning and organizational abilities
Bilingual English/Spanish speakers are of special interest, as students begin Spanish language instruction in Kindergarten
Salary
The salary range for this position is $75,000 - $110,000; a final determination will be based on years of teaching experience and level of education.
Hours
7:45-3:45 Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday
7:45-4:45 Tuesday for faculty meetings
Attendance at evening events such as Curriculum Night and Graduation.
As this is a professional position, some preparations will need to take place outside of regular school hours.
