Position Summary:
The Performing Arts Department has an opening for an individual who would, in collaboration with other artists on the Kent School faculty, design and execute theatre and dance productions in the school’s state-of-the-art theatre, Mattison Auditorium. This individual would also oversee the use of the school’s theatre whenever events requiring the use of technology occur in that space, including not only major productions, but also large gatherings, School meetings, guest artist events, and a wide variety of musical performances. In the course of these duties, the Technical Director would also teach students to master design techniques and the equipment involved in the execution of those designs. The Technical Director would also design and execute at least one course in theatrical lighting, costume, and/or set design at an appropriate level for high school-aged students.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:
Manage Mattison Auditorium, which would include keeping the equipment in the space up to date and in order, as well as scheduling of the space.
Educate Kent Students in theatrical design and execution.
Provide instruction in theatre consistent with the mission, values, and standards established by Kent School;
Establish effective communications and relationships with students, advisors and parents;
Exhibit a growth mindset about teaching practices and work toward professional goals and development;
Help to maintain school policies, regulations, and expectations;
Develop and maintain professional, collaborative, and collegial relationships with faculty and staff, as well as with community partners to the benefit of students and classes;
Supervise 3 seasons of technical theatre crews executing productions in Mattison Auditorium
Should the applicant be a member of the faculty, he/she/they will participate actively in all aspects of community life through service in Kent School’s residential and advising programs.
Perform regular duty in our residential program
Participate in Faculty committees
Serve as Advisor to 5-7 students
Secure a Public Passenger Activity Vehicle driver’s license to drive a school vehicle for school activities.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in Theatre or a related field is required. Preference given to professionals with teaching experience, ideally at the secondary level. The ideal candidate will be:
a student-centered educator, skilled in discussion facilitation
an effective oral and written communicator
eager to work collaboratively with colleagues
committed to improving their practice through peer observation
dedicated to making positive contributions to the student experience both inside and outside the classroom, including in dorms, through the co-curricular activity program, and through advising.
Additional Requirements:
Successful completion of post-offer, pre-employment criminal background checks and drug test.
Maintain punctual and regular attendance.
Work is performed on a smoke-free campus.
