The Lower School Assistant Teacher is a vital member of the classroom teaching team. The Assistant Teacher supports the Lead Teacher in the supervision, instruction, and guidance of children in a Lower School classroom. In partnership with the Lead Teacher, the Assistant Teacher establishes a safe and caring classroom community in which each child’s strengths, opinions, actions and thoughts are valued. The Assistant Teacher uses appropriate language and tone and utilizes the principles of Responsive Classroom in all interactions with the children. The Assistant Teacher promotes the school’s mission and professionally conducts themselves in all interactions with children, families, and staff. This is a part-time position, totaling 20 hours per week.
Assistant Teacher Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Teacher
Works under the direct instruction of the Lead Teacher in the classroom and the general supervision of the Head of Lower School
Assists the Lead Teacher in classroom set-up in August and classroom break-down in June
Participates in Arrival and Dismissal duties as assigned daily
Assists the Lead Teacher in maintaining the cleanliness, organization, and safety of the classroom (sweeps, wipes tables, washes art materials and dishes, returns materials to proper places, etc.)
Assists with daily attendance via MyCompass in the absence of the Lead Teacher
Assists Lead Teacher with clerical or office tasks (laminating, copying, etc.) as assigned and within the assistants' scheduled hours
Accompanies children to links classes and supports the link teacher when deemed necessary
Attends Lower School or Faculty meetings when asked by the Head of Lower School
Participates in scheduled staff Professional Development days as indicated on the school calendar
Attends Lower School special events as appropriate for grade level (Back to School Night, Grandfriends’ Day, 4th Grade Exhibition, field trips, etc.)
Attends Parent/Teacher Conferences in the fall and spring
Submits requests for leave to the Head of Lower School and informs the Lead Teacher in advance of scheduled absences
Immediately notifies the Head of Lower School and the Lead Teacher when running late or taking unscheduled leave
Refers parent questions concerning the growth and development of their children to the Lead Teacher
Assists the Lead Teacher with documentation, including recording children’s dialogue, taking photos, and writing anecdotal records
