St. Albans School seeks a visionary, dynamic experienced educator and administrator to lead its athletics program for a school of 595 boys in grades 4 - 12. St. Albans is an academically rigorous school with a proud athletic tradition. The school sees athletics not as an extra-curricular activity, but as co-curricular, and requires every student in grades 4-12 to engage in athletics. The youngest students participate in an athletics-focused physical education curriculum in grades 4 and 5, and then take part in interscholastic competition in grades 6-12.
The St. Albans Bulldogs participate in interscholastic competition in baseball, basketball, crew, cross-country, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, paddling and rock-climbing (through the Voyageur program), soccer, swimming and diving, track, tennis, and wrestling. In addition, boys have an opportunity to play intramural sports, to study dance, and to take part in a high-level outdoor education program (Voyageur). A number of sports are considered “coordinate” with NCS (including, in some cases, joint coaching staffs): crew; cross-country and track; paddling, rock climbing and Voyageur; and swimming and diving. The school is a member of, and competes for championships under the auspices of, the Interstate Athletic Conference (IAC) and the District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA).
As an Episcopal school, character, integrity and sportsmanship are at the heart of the St. Albans athletics program, and inform both of the schools’ goals for its Athletics Department: first, to field highly competitive teams in a complex athletic landscape; and second, to build an athletic program and curriculum that embodies and instills in coaches and student-athletes the mission and values of St. Albans School. St. Albans School is grounded within the “teacher-coach” tradition and, additionally, employs coaches who are not academic teachers but who value and embody the school’s placing of athletics within an educational and moral framework. Always, the underlying goal is for athletics at St. Alban School to serve the larger institutional priorities of building community and character in an Episcopal School holding to the highest academic standards.
Specifically, the well-qualified candidate will have the following responsibilities:
Building a Culture of Comprehensive, Mission-Aligned Competitive Excellence: In concert with the Headmaster, Division Heads, full-time Athletic Department faculty and part-time coaches, building a culture of competitive, mission-aligned excellence that ensures that every team can compete at a high level and every athlete can benefit from participation in St. Albans School athletics.
Hiring, Mentoring and Overseeing Coaches: Hiring, mentoring, and overseeing coaches so that they provide St. Albans School student athletes with values-based coaching, at a high technical level, that helps our students find joy in athletics and learn healthy lifetime habits. The role includes working with the Headmaster and Dean of Faculty to attract and support talented teacher-coaches, and to provide helpful and candid feedback to help all St. Albans coaches achieve their potential as educators at St. Albans and professionals within their athletic disciplines. Similarly, the role includes partnering with the school’s Human Resources Department to hire and on-board part-time “outside” coaches.
Ensuring the Health, Safety and Wellness of St. Albans Student-Athletes: Overseeing the school’s athletic trainers and working closely with them, the head of strength of conditioning, and the school’s other health professionals (including the School Nurse and outside consulting physicians) to ensure the health, safety and wellness of every student-athlete.
Hands-on Oversight of All Athletic Operations: Working closely with the members of the Athletic Department, and coordinating as needed with the Headmaster, Associate Head of School, Assistant Head of School for Finance and Operations, Division Heads, Facilities, Auxiliary Programs, and Campus Operations to provide hands-on oversight of all elements of athletic operations, including transportation; scheduling of games and officials; overnight trips (e.g. spring break team trips) where applicable; and ordering of equipment and uniforms.
Managing/Developing Athletic Facilities: On a day-to-day basis, partnering with the school and campus grounds and facilities staff to steward the athletics facilities. On a longer term level, partnering with the Headmaster and others to ensure that St. Albans School has the facilities it needs to support a highly competitive athletic program within an urban footprint.
Management of the Budget: Working with the Assistant Head of School for Finance and Operations and the school’s business office to manage the Athletic Department budget strategically and sustainably.
Representing the School in League and DCSAA Matters and Ensure Compliance with Relevant League and DCSAA Regulations/Guidelines: In close concert with the Headmaster, representing St. Albans within our league, the IAC, and within the District of Columbia’s state athletic association, including taking a lead in ensuring that St. Albans School complies with relevant league and DCSAA regulations and guidelines.
Overseeing a Positive, Effective and Sustainable Athletics Social Media Strategy: Conceptualizing, overseeing, and collaborating to provide St. Albans School with a positive and effective athletics social media presence to advance the school’s strategic goals within athletics.
Supporting and Collaborating with St. Albans Admissions: Supporting and collaborating with the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, and St. Albans Admissions, to attract, admit and enroll the most qualified and mission-appropriate students.
Collaborating with the National Cathedral School to Support Coordinate Athletics: Working closely with the National Cathedral School’s Athletic Director, including in hiring, operations, and oversight of coaches, to support the coordinate athletic programs involving both St. Albans School boys and National Cathedral School girls.
Membership in the Senior Administrative Team: Providing insight on school and athletic issues to the Headmaster as a member of the school’s Senior Administrative team.
Fully Participating in the Life of the School: The Athletic Department is a key part of the school and the Athletic Director should model full involvement in school activities, including attendance at faculty meetings and meetings to discuss the progress of students; participation in faculty-wide professional days; attendance at chapel services as much as consistent with other duties; supporting student-athletes in other areas of school life such as by attending cultural events; having a presence at the school’s daily family-style lunch for students; and attending major milestone events in the life of the school including Lessons & Carols, Senior Chapel and Breakfast, and Commencement.
St. Albans looks for candidates who will immerse themselves in the life of the school.
The position may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the school leadership and/or direct supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position/responsive to the emergent needs of the school.
Minimum Experience: Minimum of five years of teaching/coaching and/or administrative experience and familiarity with independent schools
Education: A completed 4-year Bachelors’ Degree
Certifications: N/A
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in athletic administration in an independent school setting;
Facility with technology to be able to effectively use word processing and spreadsheet programs and applications (e.g. Google Docs/Excel/Google Sheets) and to navigate the school’s educational platform (MySTA;)
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing with students, parents, and colleagues.
