Founded in 1951 and located on the Eastside of Seattle in Medina, Washington, St. Thomas School (STS) is a private, non-sectarian school for preschool through eighth grade students. Job Summary:
The on-call substitute teacher is responsible for providing high-quality instruction and classroom continuity in the absence of regular faculty. This role requires flexibility, adaptability, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment. The position works across various grade levels and subjects while modeling respect, professionalism, and cultural competency in all interactions.
Specific Responsibilities:
Delivers lesson plans and instructional materials provided by the regular teacher.
Provides instruction and support to students in various grade levels and subjects.
Assumes the regular teacher’s daily duties such as supervising students during recess, lunch, or dismissal to ensure the safety and smooth operation of the school day.
Maintains a positive and inclusive learning environment for all students.
Adapts teaching strategies to meet the individual needs of students.
Monitors student behavior and enforces classroom rules and policies.
Collaborates with other teachers and staff members to ensure continuity of instruction.
Upholds and models the mission, values, and strategic priorities of STS.
Demonstrates respect for diverse perspectives and a commitment to equity and inclusion.
Communicates effectively and professionally with students, families, and colleagues.
Maintains confidentiality and handles sensitive information with discretion.
Adheres to school policies and procedures and performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements and Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field; master’s degree or teaching certification preferred.
1+ years of experience teaching preschool, elementary/lower school, or middle school students.
Ability to actively supervise students both indoors and outdoors, in varying weather conditions.
Physical ability to meet the demands of the role, including lifting up to 50 pounds and engaging in activities such as bending, crouching, or sitting on the ground.
Readiness to obtain First Aid and CPR certification, and maintain throughout employment.
Successful completion of required background checks in accordance with school policy and state regulations.
Demonstrated cultural competency and ability to work with diverse individuals and groups.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a collaborative, flexible, and growth-oriented mindset.
Proficiency with basic technology tools and a willingness to learn school-specific systems.
