Maret School seeks a dynamic humanities teacher, curriculum leader, and innovator to serve as Humanities Department Chair. Department chairs are teachers, academic leaders, and faculty supervisors. The department chair teaches two classes, supervises instruction and implementation of the curriculum in grades 5-12, and works collaboratively with the Lower School to bridge the ELA and Social Studies teaching and learning in grades K-4.
Department chairs work closely with division directors, collaborate with other school administrators and report to the Assistant Head for Curriculum Development.
As an educational leader, the successful candidate will:
Lead department members in the establishment and implementation of departmental goals, course objectives, and instructional strategies that are consistent with the overall mission of the school, the educational philosophy, the current strategic plan, and the annual operating budget
Serve as a member of the Department Heads/Division Heads (D2) Committee, a decision-making group overseeing the school’s educational program and graduation requirements
Demonstrate knowledge of new trends in education through attendance at conferences and seminars, memberships in organizations, and subscriptions to appropriate journals
Motivate teachers to embrace collaboration and professional development
Serve as a team leader who models respect for others and has the ability to embrace and lead positive change
As an academic leader, the successful candidate will:
Establish and maintain, in collaboration with department members and a broader circle of administrators, the departmental philosophy and standards for the development of current and new course offerings within the department
Facilitate a clear scope and sequence in grades 5-12 that is developmentally appropriate, innovative, and in line with Maret’s developing Portrait of a Graduate, as well as broader curricular offerings
Coordinate and facilitate related competitions, curriculum conferences, and other academic events
Lead regular department meetings to discuss programmatic issues and offer support to teachers within the department
Hold regular one-on-one meetings with all members of the department
Educate students and families about the program and coordinate the course selection process
Coordinate with other department chairs in order to facilitate cooperation, integration, and cross-disciplinary work
Allot teaching assignments yearly, balancing individual teachers’ talents and interests with overall school needs, and arrange coverage for classes in case of departmental faculty absences
Offer input into the schedule, as appropriate
Observe each teacher's classes on a regular basis and provide evaluation, constructive feedback, praise, and mentorship for effective teaching; Communicate teacher effectiveness and related personnel matters as appropriate
Hire Humanities faculty for grades 5-12, in collaboration with the Head of School, Assistant Head for Curriculum Development, and other relevant faculty
Exhibit excellent collaboration, communication, leadership, and managerial skills
As a teacher, the successful candidate will:
Have a track record of excellent teaching in an academic environment comparable to Maret
Demonstrate subject-matter expertise and the ability to teach a variety of courses
Exhibit a deep passion for teaching and great enthusiasm for working with students of all ages and differing strengths
Display excellent classroom management skills
Have a commitment to professional development and collaboration with colleagues
Have a master’s degree (preferred)
Competitive salary and benefits. Salary range is $115,000-$155,000, dependent on years of experience and qualifications.
