The primary responsibility of the Upper School substitute coordinator/reserve teacher is to serve as the first-in-line building substitute for Upper School faculty/staff. This position is also responsible for coordinating, tracking and reporting both internal and external sub coverage as needed. The workday is 7:00am-3pm with the expectation that sub coordination responsibilities will occur outside of the school day. In addition to experience teaching or tutoring adolescents in a school setting, strong candidates will demonstrate a joy for working with adolescents, a commitment to intercultural competence and strong written and verbal communication skills.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
45% Reserve Teacher
Serve as the primary substitute teacher for faculty/staff absences
Be prepared to teach in any classroom within the Upper School as needed
Develop rapport with students
When teaching, lead the classroom to the expectations of the absent teacher and follow sub plans as appropriate
Respond to emergent student needs in the classroom and notify the appropriate dean, counselor, learning specialist, nurse or divisional administrator as necessary
Assist the US administrative team with projects as needed
45% Substitute Coordinator
Coordinate sub coverage for all faculty absences by either covering it or arranging appropriate internal or external substitute teachers
Anticipate and plan for future absences based on upcoming field trips, professional development and department planning time
Manage last-minute absence requests received the evening before or morning of the absence
Ensure substitutes have the appropriate technology, class lists and sub plans for a successful day
Maintain sub plans for each faculty/staff member
Update and track faculty/staff attendance and substitute hours worked in appropriate locations
Develop a rapport with teachers so they will assist when a sub rotation is required
Manage time off, sick and personal time requests within the Paylocity tracking system
Interview and train external substitutes
10% AP Exam Support and Proctor Coordination
Partner with the assistant director to administer AP exams
Understand AP policies and procedures to effectively train proctors
Coordinate proctor assignments in advance of the exams
Offer proctor support on exam day by fielding questions and providing breaks as needed
Minimum Qualifications:
Previous teaching experience
Detail-oriented and highly organized with recordkeeping
Positive and supportive colleague who maintains confidentiality
Ability to anticipate coverage needs and adjust according to last-minute changes
Strong spatial skills to fill coverage gaps with available substitutes
Timeliness in accepting and responding to time-off requests outside of school hours
Comfort using educational technologies including Veracross and Google Workspace
College degree
Pay range is $50,000-53,000. This rate of pay includes the expected rate for this position. In making a rate of pay determination, we consider professional experience, applicable qualifications and other job-related factors. Based on these factors, a candidate's rate of pay offer could exceed this range.
Working Conditions:
The US substitute coordinator/reserve teacher will spend time sitting, teaching and, at times, moving quickly from classroom to classroom. The position requires time at a computer as well as time meeting with teachers and teaching.
