The FASNY Lower School seeks an educator who loves working with children and is eager to collaborate with other like-minded teachers. As part of a bilingual, dual language program, in an international school, our students take French and English classes every day.
The position is for one teacher for two classes. Due to the bilingual design of our school, students in the preschool learn in French and English every day. The preschool is primarily designed as a French immersion program so English time in each classroom is limited to 1-2 hours per day.
Responsibilities would include:
Plan and Implement Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum:
Design and execute engaging, hands-on lesson plans aligned with early learning standards and curriculum goals.
Focus on learning through play, inquiry, and problem-solving, which are the primary modes of learning for this age group.
Instruct children in pre-literacy and literacy skills (e.g., letter recognition, phonics, rhyming, storytelling).
Differentiate Instruction:
Tailor activities and materials to meet the individual needs, learning styles, and developmental levels of all students.
Provide support for students with special needs and English Language Learners (ELLs).
Guide children in developing essential social skills like sharing, taking turns, listening, and cooperating.
Implement positive guidance and discipline techniques to help children manage emotions and resolve conflicts (acting as a mediator).
Promote Physical and Self-Help Skills:
Incorporate activities for fine motor skills (e.g., cutting, drawing) and gross motor skills (e.g., running, balancing).
Teach and reinforce health and hygiene habits (e.g., handwashing, covering coughs/sneezes, independent toileting/dressing).
Maintain a Safe & Orderly Environment:
Supervise children closely at all times (in the classroom, on the playground, during transitions).
Arrange the classroom to be safe, stimulating, and conducive to learning centers.
Ensure the facility and equipment are clean and well-maintained following health and safety regulations.
Observe and Assess Progress:
Conduct ongoing formal and informal assessments (observations, work samples, developmental checklists) to monitor each child's growth.
Identify potential developmental delays or special needs and refer students for necessary services.
Record Keeping and Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and developmental milestones.
Prepare and deliver progress reports and report cards.
Partner with Parents/Guardians:
Communicate regularly with families about their child's day, behavior, and academic progress.
Host parent-teacher conferences to discuss developmental goals and coordinate learning strategies between school and home.
Collaborate with Staff:
Work effectively with teaching assistants, co-teachers, administrators, and specialized service providers (e.g., speech therapist and school counselor).
FASNY teachers harmonize their lessons with French colleagues, differentiate classroom lessons regularly, and collaborate and share methods with colleagues. We assess students’ progress regularly with regard to their learning objectives and we use interactive tools such as games, visual aids, iPads, and chromebooks in the classrooms. We foster confidencein individual students, maintain a welcoming classroom environment, and develop a positive classroom community that fosters inclusivity and engagement.
As a member of the FASNY community, teachers are expected to work in a team for the benefit of the students, stay in touch with parents to support student progress, and monitor students in a variety of educational environments. Educators at FASNY support other classroom teachers and participate in regularly scheduled meetings and professional development activities.
Founded in 1980 as a one-classroom preschool, the French-American School of New York (FASNY) has offered the best in bilingual education for local francophone families and expatriate students for more than forty years. In those 40+ years, FASNY has evolved to become an international and bilingual N-12 day school educating more than 700 students on three campuses in Mamaroneck and Larchmont, New York. It is the only school in the New York metropolitan area accredited to offer both the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma and the French baccalaureate. All students also graduate with a New York State high school diploma. Our dedicated staff of teachers and administrators is committed to creating an environment that is nurturing yet challenging, one that encourages students to flourish intellectually, emotionally, and ethically. Our goal is to have a faculty and staff whose diversity reflects as closely as possible to the student body.
