Village Community School seeks to hire a part-time (50%) Assistant Drama Director. Start Date: February 2, 2026-June 11, 2026 (typically 10-month school year-Late August-June)
Salary Range: $39,000-$71,250

Position Overview:
The Assistant Drama Director works in close partnership with the Drama Director to support the artistic, social, and emotional growth of middle school students throughout the rehearsal and performance process. Grounded in collaboration, flexibility, and care for young adolescents, this role helps create a theater experience that is joyful, inclusive, and developmentally responsive. The Assistant Drama Director supports rehearsals, student performers, and production logistics while modeling creativity, empathy, clear communication, and strong classroom management. This position requires high energy, enthusiasm, a sense of humor, and a genuine love of theater and performance. The ideal candidate is a confident problem solver and creative visionary who is willing to jump into all aspects of production, from casting and blocking to set design and post-show cleanup, and who plays a crucial role in supporting student behavior, redirecting as needed, reinforcing positive choices, and communicating effectively with VCS families. This role is as logistical as it is creative, requiring flexibility, presence, and a deep commitment to student growth. A related degree and/or experience working with children in a drama program are preferred.
Hours:
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Tuesday 12:45-6:00 p.m.
Included in the 50% FTE is extended hours during pre- and post-show prep/breakdown, mandatory rehearsal weeks, and evening and all-school assembly performances (may include some Fridays)
Key Responsibilities:
Rehearsal & Performance Support
Work closely with the Drama Director to achieve the vision for the Fall Play & Spring Musical
Pre-production planning, audition preparation, casting, etc.
Assist with rehearsals by helping run warm-ups, small group work, blocking, line practice, etc.
Assist with dress rehearsal, performances, set installation and load out, strike, etc.
Work closely with students to design & construct sets, costumes, props, etc.
Work closely with fellow VCS staff to create, design, and produce all needs of the show
Work closely with students as part of the Stage Crew during tech, dress rehearsals and all performances, including backstage support and student supervision
Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with the Drama Director to align vision, expectations, and student needs
Communicate clearly and respectfully with students, faculty, staff, and families
Collaborate with technical, music, and production teams as needed
Share observations about student progress, challenges, or successes with the Drama Director
Community & Care
Model kindness, patience, and flexibility in high energy or high stress moments
Support a theater culture that is student led and rooted in teamwork, responsibility, and joy
Uphold school values related to respect, inclusion, and belonging
Help ensure that safety protocols and school expectations are always followed
Be ready and on time for all rehearsals
Enforce and maintain a safe and calm classroom environment
