Santa Fe Prep seeks a thoughtful, dynamic, and collaborative 8th Grade Global Studies Teacher to join our middle school humanities team. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching middle school students in social studies or related disciplines and will bring a strong commitment to helping students make sense of the world through geographic, political, cultural, and historical lenses. This course serves as a foundational experience designed to prepare students for future history and world studies coursework. Global Studies emphasizes the five themes of geography, comparative systems of government, globalization, world regions, and current events, while intentionally building the academic and organizational skills students need to thrive in high school. A successful candidate will foster curiosity, critical thinking, and civic discourse, while supporting students in developing strong study habits, writing skills, and research practices. The teacher will bring flexibility, creativity, and a collaborative spirit to a school culture grounded in curiosity, respect, and integrity.
Key Responsibilities
Teach an 8th grade Global Studies course focused on the five themes of geography, world regions, globalization, forms of government, world religions, and current events.
Design engaging lessons and assessments that emphasize critical thinking, civic discourse, and culturally responsive perspectives.
Support students in developing essential academic skills, including note-taking, study strategies, organization, and time management.
Teach and reinforce structured writing skills, including thesis development and the use of evidence.
Guide students in analyzing primary and secondary sources, including political cartoons, current news media, and historical texts.
Facilitate research projects using appropriate tools and methodologies, including source evaluation and citation practices.
Integrate current events into the curriculum to help students connect course content to the contemporary world.
Collaborate with humanities colleagues to design interdisciplinary projects and learning experiences aligned with Prep’s mission and values.
Participate fully in school life beyond the classroom—advising a group of ~10 students, attending outdoor education trips and community service efforts, sponsoring a club, and building meaningful relationships with students and families.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in history, geography, political science, global studies, education, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
3–5 years of experience teaching middle school social studies or humanities coursework.
Demonstrated ability to teach research, writing, and analytical skills in developmentally appropriate ways.
Strong classroom presence with the ability to foster respectful discussion, collaboration, and civic dialogue.
Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive teaching practices.
Enthusiasm for working with middle school students and supporting their academic and personal growth.
Qualified applicants should submit a cover letter, résumé, and a list of three professional references in that order, in one combined PDF, to Anna Hastings, Executive Assistant to the Head of School (anhastings@sfprep.org).
