Teaching Fellow Program Overview
The Academy seeks individuals with an interest in pursuing a career in teaching or working with youths. Fellows must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree. Prior experience working with youth is a plus, but not required.
The Academy’s Teaching Fellow Program is a rewarding experience that enables individuals to gain valuable and practical experience in teaching, preparing lesson plans, classroom management, and coaching. Perhaps more importantly, Fellows see a different perspective on societal dynamics and how he/she can all play a role in social change.
The Academy’s Teacher Fellow Program is a two-year program. In the first year, Fellows will work with an experienced teacher to gain knowledge on lesson planning, classroom management, and more. As time progresses, Fellows will co-teach with the support and mentorship of experienced teachers. In the second year, Fellows will take on a larger role in the classroom, assisting with planning lessons, providing instruction, etc. while still receiving support and mentoring from an experienced teacher. All Fellows participate in faculty meetings and professional development.
In addition, Teacher Fellows are provided the following:
Shared housing with other Teaching Fellows just blocks away in a newly renovated rowhouse with all appliances including an onsite washer and dryer (comparable to a 1 bedroom/1 bath apartment in the Federal Hill neighborhood
Professional House Cleaning Services (6 times a year)
Payment of all utilities (except phone)
House maintenance and repairs
General house supplies (cleaning, general use, etc.)
An annual stipend of $18,000 for first-year Fellows and $20,000 for second-year Fellows
Additional stipends for other duties including coaching
Annual Membership to all 9 Merritt Athletic Club locations
Health Insurance premiums and copays (a $1,000 stipend is given for those who decline coverage and are covered by a parental insurance policy)
Dental and Vision Insurance premiums
The opportunity to take courses toward an advanced degree at the Graduate School of Education at Loyola University Maryland, tuition-free, contingent on your admission to that program, and the University continuing to offer this opportunity to Academy faculty.
Teacher Fellows work alongside and are valued members of the Academy’s faculty and staff. Duties include:
July Term (4 weeks): the start of the Academy’s school year and a shortened day filled with academics and social activities.
Faculty Orientation and Meetings: Held the week prior to the start of the academic year and generally two times a month throughout the academic year.
Academic Year (September through May): daily duties including four academic periods with your assigned mentor teacher, lunch and recess duties, and after school activities. The Academic Year is an extended day from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Thursday and until 3:30 PM on Fridays.
June Camp: a two-week overnight camp with rising 7th and 8th grade students with fellow faculty.
Assistance with Admission Open Houses (four Saturdays) and our JumpStart program (four Saturdays)
Graduation: Teaching Fellows process into our 8th graduation with all teaching faculty.
Similar to all teaching faculty, Fellows are off all recognized holidays per the published school calendar, winter break, spring break, and the time between academic terms.

Founded in 1993 and located in Baltimore’s Federal Hill neighborhood, St. Ignatius Loyola Academy is an extended day and eleven-month school year program for 120 fifth through eighth grade students representing 23 zip codes across Baltimore. St. Ignatius Loyola Academy graduates attend exemplary public and private high schools, both day and boarding, in Baltimore and throughout the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions. Our Graduate Support Program provides counseling and advising support to over 200 graduates who are currently attending outstanding regional and national high schools and colleges.
