The Dean of Elementary School is the leader of the Elementary School Student Life team and works to support the well-being and development of students in grades 1-5. The Dean organizes and supervises the activities of student support staff within the Elementary School. This role focuses on students, people, processes, and projects, with a central responsibility for preventing and managing conflicts involving young students. The Dean acts by favoring dialogue, play-based learning, and mediation from an educational perspective.
As the leader of the Elementary School student life, they are ultimately responsible for ensuring students understand and respect the school's values and norms. The Dean of Elementary School (DoSES) reports to the Head of Elementary School, in collaboration with the Head of Middle School. They are a member of the Elementary School leadership team and collaborate closely with other division leaders to ensure a consistent student experience. This position requires a self-starting, resourceful, and well-organized team player with excellent interpersonal skills, particularly when working with young children and their families.
At the Lycée, “the student is at the center of the system.” All staff are expected to provide encouragement, offer positive reinforcement, and show respect for each student. The DoSES should be a self-starting, resourceful, well organized team player with the ability to work well under pressure and to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills.
All employees are strongly encouraged to work towards proficiency in both French and English languages and to develop a familiarity and understanding of the Lycée's multicultural environment. The position will require additional work hours as needed for school events and/or school sponsored activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The duties outlined below are considered to be the most significant responsibilities of the DoSES and are essential for effective performance in this position. The DoSES is working in close collaboration with the DoSMS and the DoSHS for all transversal policies, protocols and procedures. The DoSES’ responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Student support
Work in close collaboration with teachers and other staff to help students overcome difficulties by documenting and exchanging information on student behavior and activity, academic results, and personal circumstances.
Work closely with other divisions to ensure school-wide consistency of social-emotional learning, behavior, and disciplinary protocols, as well as major points of transition between divisions.
The DoSES will also work closely with Division leaders and the Director of La Passerelle to plan professional learning opportunities for all faculty and staff to ensure coherence of the student experience.
In liaison with the DoSMS and DoSHS, and with the division leaders establish and implement academic and social policies, protocols, and practices that serve to support student development, learning, health, and safety.
Coordinate new student orientation and special programs for grades 1-5, such as assemblies and school-wide events.
Facilitate and organize student participation in age-appropriate representative bodies or leadership opportunities.
Organize and lead the training of the student delegates and work closely with the Student Council to foster dialog within the institution
Participate in the Comité pour l'Établissement (CPET), review the student handbook each year to ensure accurate documentation and explanation of current school policies and practices relating to discipline
Student conduct
Promote high standards and expectations for academic performance, personal integrity, and community responsibility in an age-appropriate manner.
Work towards building a positive community and fostering communication skills among young students through modeling and structured activities.
Implement a tiered behavior management system that is grounded in the School’s Rules and Regulations and restorative justice practices, and ensure that infractions are teachable moments, in collaboration with the DoSMS and DOSHS;
Address social and academic infractions working closely with faculty and staff to ensure compliance with school policies;
Maintain correspondence related to conduct with parents and other concerned parties. Counsel students when necessary, working closely with the school psychologist and their team.
Train elementary faculty and staff to efficiently use these protocols, ensuring that student and parent contacts related to disciplinary issues are properly documented and safeguarded.
Establish priorities pertaining to the students' well-being and behavior protocols by working closely with the educational teams.
Divisional organization
Supervise assistants in collaboration with elementary homeroom teachers.
In collaboration with homeroom teachers, track student attendance (frequency, follow-up of absences and instances of tardiness).
Safeguard all divisional data pertaining to areas of work in compliance with school policies and applicable regulations.
Participate actively in meetings such as faculty meetings, parent meetings, Conseil de classe, and other divisional-level committees.
Oversee and manage students during non-classroom time, organizing their movements and monitoring their circulation within the building, including in recreational areas and common spaces.
Work with maintenance and operations staff to assure the security of students, including scheduling and overseeing the different emergency drills
Assist the HoES in the organization of class structures and lists.
Actively participate in all Cycle and Department meetings; and in Primary school leadership team meetings.
Communicate openly, clearly and frequently with parents to help to better understand rules, expectations, and the way the Lycée functions.
Other duties may be assigned in the course of the school year.
Annual Salary Range: $120,000 - $140,000
