Job Summary:

1st-grade teachers instruct a core curriculum of math, language arts, science, social studies, and life skills in a self-contained teaching environment. A candidate for this role will also seek to establish a strong, affirming classroom culture that embodies the School’s Quaker values and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Other duties include writing student reports; collaborating with students, colleagues, and families; attending meetings; and fulfilling other faculty duties, such as supervising recess and lunch.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as exemplified in their instructional practice and in cultivating impactful relationships with students, families/caregivers, and colleagues. Through a set of holistic and innovative instructional practices, they will adapt their teaching to fit the needs of their students. Moreover, they will have sound pedagogical skills, highly developed writing and organizational skills, and a student-centered approach to teaching, steeped in inspiring students to think creatively and critically.

Core Duties/Responsibilities:

• Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice both in their teaching practice and in building relationships with students and other community members
• Teach one section of 1st grade, a core curriculum of math, language arts, science, social studies, and life skills in a self-contained teaching environment
• Attend meetings, proctor recess and lunch duties according to a rotational schedule, and write thoughtful, detailed student progress reports
• Maintain a growth mindset and actively participate in faculty professional development and supervision, including observations and feedback conversations, with support from the Associate Head of School
• Regularly review and update curriculum maps in partnership with grade level colleagues and the Associate Head of School
• Support students’ social and emotional growth through structured lessons, daily routines, and meaningful interactions aligned with Quaker values
• Ensure the safety and well-being of all students at all times
• Other duties as assigned by the Associate Head of School, such as chaperoning school events

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Proficient with Google Suite or related software
• A comprehensive understanding of the field of education and a demonstrated willingness to explore and embrace new pedagogical practices, technologies, and developing trends
• Passion for teaching elementary-aged children, fostering creativity, curiosity, and a love of learning

Education and Experience:

• Prior experience teaching elementary school-aged children is highly preferred
• Prior experience with math and language arts curricula, such as Illustrative Math, Advancing Literacy, Heggerty, and/or Fundations, preferred
• Documented prior experience in a classroom/education setting, experience in independent and Quaker schools is highly desirable
• A bachelor’s degree in a related educational field is required. An advanced degree is preferred but not required
• Minimum of 3 years of experience teaching at the elementary level

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
• Moves equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
