St. James Academy is seeking an English teacher for grades 6-8, who is eager to foster curiosity, collaboration and critical thinking skills among students . The candidate will be familiar with the content area, proficient with technology, and display a strong work ethic.
Responsibilities:
Develops and implements a strong English program with instructional emphasis on skill development in the areas of literature and composition. This program must adhere to the current grade curriculum, gearing it to address the needs, special talents, styles, and pace of learning of the individual child and the collective class.
Assists in the planning and preparation of the learning environment including setting up and maintaining the classroom learning centers and preparing and/or obtaining needed supplies, materials, and textbooks. This process should be conducted in an organized, thorough, and timely manner.
Conducts him/herself in a professional manner at all times which reflects the mission and philosophy of the Academy.
Ensures that adequate and complete lesson plans are available for a substitute for a planned or unplanned absence.
Establishes and maintains an effective partnership with parents through conferences, conversations and consistent communication. Keeps parents informed about classroom activities and the individual progress of their children.
Ensures the safety of the children at all times.
Treats children, parents, faculty, staff, and administration with dignity and respect and practices positive approaches to discipline, as outlined in the Academy’s Discipline Policy.
Keeps the Middle School Head apprised of children’s progress, potential problems, or needed consultation between parents, teachers, and the Middle School Head.
Attend Department Meetings, Faculty Meetings, Professional Development activities, as well as other duties outside of the classroom that are specific to the middle school program.
Serve as an advisor for 10+ students.
Serve the school community beyond the classroom by leading a student club and attending activities.
Collaborate with other teachers in the department, school administrators and other educators across departments and grade levels.
Requirements:
Bachelor of Arts in English, MA degree preferred, but not required
Middle School teaching experience in the area of English/Language Arts
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Experience using tablet computers in teaching
Good organizational skills
Willingness to teach students with a wide variety of reading and writing skills
Ability to manage classes of 20+ students
Facility in employing a variety of teaching methods
Desire to collaborate with department members on departmental goals
