This position will be covering a temporary leave of absence for an Upper School Counselor (Grades 9-12) at the beginning of the 24/25 school year. The position will be located at the Upper School campus in Lafayette.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities for this position will include, but are not limited to:
Work with student deans and campus directors to identify potential crises before they arise and implement programs to address problems before they occur.
Work toward strengthening individuals and the community to be more resilient to challenges.
Meet weekly with the Dean Team group, which is composed of grade-level deans, upper school directors, and the learning support specialist.
Respond to mental health and wellbeing crises as they arise.
Help students to navigate developmental challenges and difficulties typical of adolescence.
Assess when students need ongoing psychotherapy or mental health services outside of school.
Support the everyday growth of and support of students who are not facing an imminent crisis.
Assist faculty, staff and parents in understanding students, as a way of providing support for teaching and administration in a school setting.
Provide limited counseling services to students and families seeking (voluntary) support.
Provide follow-up support (i.e. case management) to students and their families.
Provide outside counseling and mental health referrals to students and families as determined by the family’s need or through counselor evaluation.
Crisis Intervention – Provide assessment and clinical support for students (and their families) in crisis. This includes, but is not limited to: Involuntary placement due to suicidal/homicidal intention and Child Protective Service (mandated reporting status) situations.
Serve as a consultant to faculty and administrators, as related to individual students and issues.
Provide counseling, consultation, and support to parents on a case by case basis.
Consult with outside clinical and medical support personnel when approved by the family and student to provide on-campus support for students.
Keep accurate notes, records (as appropriate), and statistics of meetings and other services provided.
Meet regularly with the Lower and Middle School Directors and the K-8 Director as well as the Upper School Director and Assistant Head of Upper School to keep them apprised of trends on campus, individual students of concern, and to respond to needs/concerns of the School.
Uphold legal and ethical obligations associated with the role of counselor in a school setting (most especially those upholding confidentiality and reporting).
Additional duties and responsibilities as needed
Qualifications
Master’s or Doctoral Degree in Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, School Psychology or substantially related field
Licensed as Psy.D., Ph.D., MFT or MSW to practice in the State of California, or if holding pre-licensure status, substantial direct experience working with and supporting adolescents and their families
Knowledge of laws, regulations and ethical guidelines relating to delivery of mental health services in the school setting (by training, study or experience, e.g., Pupil Services Credential, etc.)
Proven experience with children and adults
Effective oral and written communication
Preferred Qualifications:
Independent school experience
Familiarity with resources and youth/family support in the Bay Area
Pay Range:
Bentley uses a competitive salary scale, which takes into account experience, education, and skill level. The salary scale for this position ranges from $69,525 for counselors with the minimum experience to $140,000 for counselors with over 40 years of prior experience.
Temporary or part-time faculty are compensated on the same scale, pro-rated for their percentage or term of employment.
