Phillips Academy seeks a full-time Director of Athletic Training. We are interested in candidates who are enthusiastic about managing a team of certified athletic trainers and programs for a range of student-athletes, from interscholastic competitors to those participating in intramural and LIFE sports. We are also especially interested in candidates with expertise in holistic approaches to injury prevention, care, and rehabilitation and interest in working closely with our coaches and school physician. We seek dynamic candidates who will be active participants not only in the athletics program but also in the academic and residential programs at this boarding school. Master’s degree plus a minimum of three years’ teaching experience preferred.

Summary:
Directs the athletic training program for interscholastic, intramural and lifetime activities and oversees the operation of the school’s four athletic training rooms. Coordinates medical coverage for all athletic practices and games. Manages athletic training team in the prevention, care and rehabilitation of injuries incurred by student-athletes. Directs athletic training operations, including the development and implementation of policies and procedures. Collaborates with coaches to develop safe practice plans and Return to Play decisions.
Along with four certified/licensed athletic trainers, provide sports health care for all Academy students. The Director of Athletic Training Services will work collaboratively with athletic training team to provide sports medicine services (injury prevention, treatment and rehabilitation along with sideline injury care, game day coverage) for over 1,100 students who participate in a mandatory exercise and sport program.
The Director role is considered essential to the operation of our program. The individual selected for this position will be integral to our academic, athletic, and residential programming and will reside on campus. Generally, the schedule will be Mon-Sat and occasional Sundays, depending on the needs of the department and athletic schedule. Schedule begins one week prior to preseason, extends through playoff seasons in fall, winter and spring and finishes one week after end of school year.
Qualifications:
Certificates/License: Certification by the NATABOC to qualify for a Massachusetts State License to practice.
Physical and Personal: The candidate should be detail-oriented, not only in developing appropriate rehabilitative plans, but also keeping meticulous records of patient progress. The Director of Athletic Training Services should demonstrate strong interpersonal skills while working one-on-one with patients on a regular basis. This position requires compassion for the injured student while employing sound communication skills in communicating with patients and parents alike. The candidate must have the physical stamina and strength to work on their feet throughout the day, lift patients, as well as carry athletic training equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Directs the athletic training program to include physical evaluation, treatment services, and therapeutic exercise for student-athletes who incur acute and chronic injuries in a required exercise and sport program that involves over one thousand students. In collaboration with physicians, specialists and healthcare providers at Sykes Wellness Center, makes decisions regarding return to play timing and conditions.
Directs and oversees the supervision of athletic training personnel, including work allocation, training and problem resolution. Evaluates work performance and makes recommendations for professional growth. Promote teamwork and motivation for athletic training staff to achieve peak performance.
Collaborates with Strength and Conditioning Specialists in developing and implementing weight training and conditioning plans for athletes.
Coordinate evidence-based, targeted prevention programs/education for interscholastic athletes.
Collaborates with Academy’s Registered Dietician in educating athletes on performance eating and recovery.
Advises coaching staff of medical status on a consistent basis.
Coordinate athletic training and medical coverage for all practices and games sanctioned by the athletics department.
Assists in annual budget planning process and regularly monitors expenditures.
Assists in capital expense request process to maintain four athletic training rooms.
Keep inventory of athletic training supplies to sustain four separate training facilities. Responsible for attaining bids from sports medicine supply vendors for annual purchase and supplemental orders. Order equipment and supplies for training rooms, as well as support staff professional development within the limits of the annual budget.
Oversees safety factors of athletic events, including facility and environmental conditions, and communicates with athletics director and coaches to minimize risk on injury to athletes.
Work with Athletic Scheduling Officer and Director of Athletics to build team practice and game schedules that are compatible with athletic training staffing regarding ratios and appropriate athletic healthcare delivery.
Provide athletic training services to Phillips Academy student-athletes according to Policies and Procedures of Phillips Academy Athletic Training.
Take leadership role regarding decision-making and implementation of the policies and procedures for the athletic training staff.
Review and update Emergency Action Plans with athletic training team on an annual basis.
Assign athletic trainer schedules for training room coverage throughout each season.
Meet regularly with the school physician and athletics director to foster collaboration between Sykes Wellness Center and athletics department.
Work with athletic training staff to provide coaches with information on athletes medically eligible to compete under Phillips Academy policies and state regulations.
Act as liaison between physicians, specialists, Wellness Center, coaches, athletes and their parents.
Maintain accurate records of injuries and treatment/rehabilitation programs within the Academy’s electronic medical record system.
Assist Director of Athletics and athletic training staff as requested.
Residential/advising duties, committee work and Instructor in PHD200 (Physical Education and Lifestyle Wellness).

In collaboration with healthcare providers at Sykes Wellness Center, teach students in the fundamental concepts of infection prevention, stress management, nutrition, sleep, exercise, healthy relationships, substance abuse, and sexual health.
Facilitate group dynamics through the shared challenges of indoor ropes course.
Teach aquatic safety unit (drown proofing) in school’s pool.
Teach basic exercise physiology concepts in classroom setting to be connected to action in the school’s gym and fitness center.
