Overview
The Kew-Forest School is a co-educational independent day school founded in 1918 in Forest Hills, Queens, New York. Today, the School serves approximately 185 students in Preschool (3-year-olds) through Grade 12. The Kew-Forest School student body is one of the most diverse and international to be found at any independent school in the country. Kew-Forest students have varied cultural, racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds and a majority are multilingual.
The Kew-Forest School is looking for per diem substitute teachers to provide instruction in the absence of a lead teacher (Preschool-Grade 5) or specialist teacher (Preschool-Grade 5: Art, Library, Music, Physical Education, Spanish, or STEAM/Typing).
Responsibilities
The role of substitute teachers is to provide high-quality classroom instruction, manage the classroom environment, and ensure the safety and well-being of students in the absence of the regular teacher. Specific responsibilities of substitute teachers may include, but are not limited to:
teaching lesson plans as directed by the absent teacher. Consult with the Head of Lower School if plans are not provided;
promoting student learning and growth. Supporting students in understanding content and successfully completing tasks;
maintaining a clean, orderly, and organized classroom environment;
fostering a safe, respectful, and positive learning environment in accordance with school policies and classroom routines;
assuming all duties and responsibilities of the absent teacher, including non-classroom duties;
maintaining discipline and classroom control that fosters a safe and positive learning environment for all students and staff in accordance with school policies;
reporting student injuries, accidents, illnesses, and disciplinary issues to the Head of Lower School immediately; and
performing other specific job-related duties as assigned by the Head of Lower School.
The Ideal Candidate
In hiring our substitute teachers, we seek reliable, mature, nurturing, enthusiastic, and dedicated people with a strong desire to teach. Our substitute teachers typically hold or are working toward their teaching credential or a B.A. degree. Candidates who have professional experience working with diverse children ages 3-10 and a demonstrated commitment to anti-bias education are preferred.

Salary Range
$180 from 7:45 am - 3:20 pm; $90 for half day from 7:45 am - 12:00 pm; 12:00 pm - 3:20 pm
