Math Teaching Fellow Program 

Avenues seeks to educate young talented mathematicians who desire to become teachers in the pedagogy of Problem-Based Learning.  We especially seek candidates who are aligned with the mission of graduating problem-solvers that are uniquely equipped to understand and solve global-scale problems.  Realizing that mathematics lends itself to developing excellent problem solvers in many ways, we want our teaching fellow program to help train teachers that not only encourage creativity and risk-taking in problem solving, but a strong sense of community, respect and safety while collaborating in the classroom.

This is a two-year program during which the teaching fellow will work closely with a mentor teacher, an assistant division head and leader of the teaching fellow seminar in order to make use of the support and resources that will help to shape them into the teacher they will become. After the two year fellow program, candidates will be considered for open positions at Avenues Campuses around the world should they be qualified, and even prior to that, if there is a mutual feeling that another direction should be taken, the fellow would be counseled as such.

Each teaching fellow will be hired as a full member of the faculty, with responsibilities in the first year that include:

• Summer Curriculum Prep Work Online, if possible
• During the first school year - scheduled for two courses (1 for observation and 1 co-taught)
• Math Lab Staffing during the school day
• Teaching Fellow seminar work approximately every other week
• Observations of other full-time teachers’ classes for the first year

Responsibilities in the second year will include:

• Two or three courses, depending on staffing needs, co-taught or individually taught, at the recommendation of the ADH* and mentor
• Math Lab Staffing
• Other duties as assigned by the ADH
