Interlochen Center for the Arts is seeking an innovative and accomplished Jazz Program Director to lead and shape the Jazz Studies program within our renowned institution. Building on strong jazz traditions at Interlochen, this leadership role involves overseeing the development and implementation of a comprehensive jazz curriculum, fostering artistic excellence, and inspiring the next generation of jazz musicians.
The Director will collaborate with a team of esteemed faculty members to mentor students in their musical journey, guide their creative exploration, and contribute to the dynamic and culturally rich atmosphere that defines Interlochen. This position presents a unique opportunity for an experienced jazz educator and performer to make a lasting impact on the development of young artists, fostering a deep appreciation for jazz as both an art form and a way of life.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Together with the Director of Music and talent acquisition team, participate in the recruitment and selection process for jazz faculty, identifying and bringing in top-tier educators who align with Interlochen's commitment to excellence.

Provide visionary leadership to the Jazz Studies program, instilling a culture of artistic exploration, innovation, and collaboration among students and faculty.

Spearhead the design and continual refinement of a cutting-edge jazz curriculum, ensuring alignment with Interlochen's commitment to excellence in arts education for Camp, Academy, and Interlochen Online.

Manage the daily schedule, faculty schedules, and performance schedules, ensuring smooth coordination and optimal use of resources to maximize the impact of the Jazz Studies program.

Curate a diverse and inclusive repertoire, exposing students to a wide range of styles, genres, and cultural influences within the realm of jazz, fostering a comprehensive understanding and appreciation for the art form.

Actively engage in teaching both classes and private lessons, providing personalized instruction to students and contributing to their individualized musical development.

Actively contribute to the recruitment process, participating in auditions, engaging with prospective students, and representing Interlochen at jazz-related events to attract exceptional talent to Camp, Academy and Interlochen Online.

Represent Interlochen in professional organizations and maintain and develop close ties with feeder programs, schools, and instructors, as well as with college and university programs to facilitate the success of our students as they move into higher education.

Cultivate strong connections with the broader musical and arts community, representing Interlochen and contributing to the cultural vibrancy of the region.

Stay at the forefront of jazz education trends and innovations, actively participating in professional development activities to ensure the ongoing relevance and impact of the Jazz Studies program.

Develop and curate opportunities for students to showcase their talent through off-campus performances, collaborating with external venues and fostering community connections to provide students with diverse performance experiences.

Perform other duties as assigned.
- Master's degree in music preferred

Expertise as a jazz musician with significant national and international experience as a teacher-artist-performer required

Ability to teach students at all levels.

Ability to develop appropriate curriculum.

Ability to identify and engage guest artists of national and international repute.

Ability to work with both internal and external stakeholders in advocating for and highlighting the jazz program of IAC.
