Ransom Everglades is seeking a forward-thinking librarian for the upper school library. The Ransom Everglades libraries continue to evolve to support student learning in the 21st century; the school seeks a candidate eager to contribute to discussions about the future of libraries and their place--physical and virtual--in independent schools. The librarian contributes to the development and implementation of all aspects of the library operations, including circulation, reference, cataloging and special projects, and supervision of the open-plan library space. We are searching for a librarian to focus especially on liaising with the academic departments to create book and database collections that support our curriculum, collaborate with librarians and the faculty in the development of libguides, maintain the webpages of the libraries, and contribute to the teaching of library and research skills to middle and upper school students. The libraries at Ransom Everglades develop and curate a collection that represents diverse cultures, perspectives, and viewpoints, and to promote a love of reading in the Ransom Everglades community; rotating library displays and featured collections encourage reading on a wide variety of topics. Recent displays, for example, have featured Native American literature, Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage, celebrations of black history month and women’s history month, and diverse genres of music. Librarians provide formal and informal opportunities for reference and research support for students and faculty. A unique opportunity exists for qualified candidates to support the Ransom Everglades archives. A collection of thousands of materials, the archives holds materials related to the history of the school since the late 19th century. Significant cataloging work and an effort to make the resources of the archives more visible within the community is expected in the archives over the next several years.
The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, Information Studies, or a similar field from an ALA-accredited institution; previous experience in an independent school or college or university library; advanced search and research skills using proprietary databases; experience creating online resource pages (e.g. LibGuides) to support academic work of students and faculty; experience working in special collections and/or archives; excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; a willingness to embrace the school’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a love for working with and inspiring students.
