Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, in Faribault, Minnesota, is seeking a student-centered, enthusiastic, and experienced individual to lead our College Counseling Office.
Founded in 1858, Shattuck-St. Mary’s School (SSM) is an Episcopal, co-educational, college preparatory, independent boarding/day school serving 400 students in grades 6 through a postgraduate year from 43 states and 22 countries. Set on a beautiful 250-acre campus south of Minneapolis/St. Paul in Minnesota, SSM offers a mix of traditional and progressive education. The Director of College Counseling will:
- Lead and manage the College Counseling office, which includes one additional full-time college counselor and one half-time administrative assistant.
- Advise students on all aspects of the college search, application, and admission process.
- Educate students and families on a broad range of colleges and universities, as well as college admission testing programs, financial aid, NCAA regulations, and specialized performance-based admissions (e.g., music and theater).
- Build and maintain relationships with parents, faculty and staff, and college admissions officers.
- Write personalized letters of recommendations for students applying to college.
- Develop and maintain relationships with college representatives through campus visits, participation in professional organizations, and advocating of behalf of seniors in the admissions process.
- Develop and execute communication and programming for SSM students and families regarding the college application process.
- Advise Academic Dean and Department Chairs on course selection with the lens of the college admissions process; serve on the Academic Team with our Academic Dean, Department Chairs, and Director of Learning Support.
- Provide guidance to the administrative team regarding curriculum, programming, and policy decisions.
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- Significant experience in selective college admission or independent school college counseling. We will consider candidates with less experience if they can demonstrate relevant and strong preparation for this role.
- Exceptional writing and public speaking skills.
- Confident, self-directed, and excited about working with adolescent students.
- Interest in participating in the wider school community.
- Some background in technology, social media, and college athletic recruitment is helpful.
