The Buckley School, an all-boys K-9 school located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, seeks earth science teachers and STEM instructors for our Science Olympiad Program.
Science Olympiad is a national competition which offers 23 events which span four categories: lab events, such as forensics and chemistry, construction events, inquiry events and academic tests. This exciting program engages students and has led to several regional and state level successes. The program meets regularly on Saturdays from 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM. The competition will take place March 2, 2024.
Earth Science Role Description:
We are looking for individuals to teach earth science topics to our students. Teachers, college/graduate students, professors and naturalists with expertise in the following subjects are encouraged to apply:
- Fossils
- Forestry
- Physics of wind, wind power, as well as understanding wind as an alternative energy source
- Reading road and topographical maps
- Astronomy (stars, galaxies, exoplanets)
STEM Instructor Role Description:
We are looking for one person to lead our construction events in our STEM program. Structural engineers, builders, architects, or graphic designers who are able to work with balsa wood, other construction materials, and even use laser cutters and 3D printers to design and build the following are needed for the following events:
- An air cannon
- A Wheeled Vehicle (car)
- A truss tower
- A Rollercoaster
- A wind turbine
You will be the lead instructors for at least 2 or 3 of these designs, and you will collaborate with colleagues in order to prepare prototypes so you may instruct students on how to build their own models. Design specifications will be provided.
If you're a self starter with strong skills, please apply! We need exceedingly strong and engaging candidates, especially in STEM as there is limited time to complete each construction.
