POSITION SUMMARY:
Prairie is seeking an outstanding writer and clear communicator who is eager to use their voice to help further one of the finest independent schools in the country.
If you are a careful, curious listener adept at connecting with people and sharing their stories in a way that is fun and memorable, sophisticated and sincere, then you could be the next Communication Manager at Prairie.
As one of the institution's lead storytellers, you will report to the Director of Communication and play a major role in helping the school speak to its four main constituencies: current parents and students, prospective families, alumni, and donors.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- In concert with the Director of Communication, create a wide variety of content for print, web, email, social, and other marketing vehicles. In doing so, understand the importance of including and giving voice to a variety of people and experiences.
- Serve as one of the main authors for Prairie, our biannual alumni magazine, and Prairie News, our school blog.
- Serve as the primary contact for all school-issued parent communication, including our regular parent newsletter, The Weekly.
- Possessing a keen understanding of digital and marketing trends, the Communication Manager will play a prominent role in growing Prairie's social/digital presence in an effort to reach prospective parents and students where they spend a significant amount of time: on their phones.
- Work with local, regional, and national reporters to earn media placement in a variety of publications/websites/etc.
- Assist with photography and event support for the Advancement team as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Extraordinary writing skills, with a talent for addressing numerous constituencies and understanding the appropriate style for each medium and audience.
- The capacity to work in a fast-paced environment while successfully managing details, deadlines, and projects.
- The ability and desire to collaborate with colleagues school-wide.
- A commitment to ensuring the clarity of all school communication and the ability to translate a variety of submitted content into succinct, logical prose.
- A curious, creative, growth mindset.
- The capability to work independently and strategically, to take initiative, and to react to changing situations and new opportunities appropriately.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree required. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years’ experience in a communication role, will provide a robust writing portfolio to demonstrate their expertise in writing and editing, and a passion for inclusion and community efforts. Experience in academia is preferred, but not required.
