Asheville School is looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated Head Mountain Bike Coach that is able to motivate individuals and take the mountain bike team to the next level. Successful candidates for this position will possess a strong background in mountain biking, experience working with youth, and the ability to manage and develop a program. This position works under the Director of Mountaineering.
Seasons: Fall (Aug. 28 - Oct. 27) and Spring (Feb. 12 - May 14)
Asheville School is an intentionally small, coed 9-12 boarding school nestled on a beautiful 300-acre campus in Asheville, North Carolina. Surrounded by woods, our historic campus offers 350,000 total square feet of academic, athletic, residential, and specialty activity facilities along with athletic fields, outdoor learning areas, and hiking trails.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement innovative training programs, practices, and group rides on and off-campus 3:30 - 6 pm Monday-Friday
- Train and work collaboratively with assistant coaches and other staff
- Develop a competitive event schedule in conjunction with the Mountaineering Director and other local entities
- Transport the team to events and races, including some evenings and weekends, and potentially traveling outside the Asheville area
- Maintain a high level of awareness and risk management in accordance with school policies.
- Maintain and manage a bicycle fleet including ongoing service and scheduling service to bicycles.
- Manage day-to-day operations of the biking program including gear and facility management
- Develop and manage a budget for the biking program
- Assist in selection, purchase, fitting, and maintenance of equipment
- CPR & First Aid (Asheville School can provide this training upon hire)
- Valid driver’s license
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- USA Cycling Coaching License
- PMBIA Level I Instructor or equivalent
- Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder
- Ability to perform bicycle maintenance
- 2+ years of coaching or related athletic experience, OR 2+ years cycling at the high school, collegiate, or professional level.
- Experience working with teens from diverse backgrounds in outdoor/experiential settings
- Leave No Trace awareness
- Knowledge of and adherence to “Rules of the Trail”
- Experience safely driving large vehicles on unpaved roads
Work Setting & Environmental Factors
The Head Mountain Bike Coach frequently works in both indoor and outdoor settings. Indoor work may be conducted in a typical bike workshop or classroom setting, while outdoor work may be conducted primarily on trails, roads, and terrain suitable for mountain biking. The work environment involves exposure to various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow and wind.

The coach should possess:
- High level of physical fitness and endurance to actively participate in mountain biking activities, including riding on challenging terrains and trails, and lifting bikes.
- Adequate strength and agility to handle the physical demands of mountain biking. (This includes maneuvering the bike through difficult obstacles, maintaining balance, and handling the bike over rough and uneven terrain.)
- Excellent mountain biking skills and ability to demonstrate and teach proper techniques to student athletes. (This may involve riding on various types of terrain, performing jumps, drops, and other technical maneuvers.)
- Ability to endure long periods of physical exertion, as they may be required to lead group rides, participate in races, or guide athletes on extended rides.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 40lbs) for equipment setup, maintenance, and transportation.
- Ability to clearly convey instructions in a variety of ways, demonstrate techniques, and motivate student athletes.
- Ability to withstand exposure to different climates, such as extreme heat, cold, rain, or wind.
