Baker Demonstration School, an independent progressive PK-8 school on Chicago’s North Shore, is seeking an exemplary full-time Math teacher for its Middle School program. We value candidates who are passionate about progressive education, have alove of students and teaching, and are innovative and knowledgeable about experientiallearning. We place a high value on community and seek candidates who have excellentinterpersonal skills and will work well with students, colleagues, and parents. Thisteaching position includes teaching pre-algebra and algebra for 7th and 8th-gradestudents and serving as a co-advisor to a group of middle school students. The positionalso includes supporting the Robotics Program during the Fall and Winter trimesters andlaunching the Math Olympiad program in the Third Trimester. This full-time positionincludes curriculum development, participation in all professional development meetings,collaboration with colleagues, and additional responsibilities throughout the year thatrequire attendance at evening and weekend school events.
Knowledge and experience with progressive education philosophy and aconstructivist pedagogical approach
Four-year degree in Mathematics, Secondary Education, or related field
3-5 years experience teaching middle school mathematics
Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in teaching mathematics - particularlyin problem-based approaches for Geometry and Algebra
Expertise with supporting differentiated instruction and implementation oflearning support plans
Experience with developing, implementing, and teaching anti-bias and anti-racistcurricula
Expertise in developing an engaging, collaborative classroom community thatencourages problem-solving, critical thinking skills, service learning, and studentleadership
A deep commitment to enhancing an inclusive school community for students andadults based on cultural competence, social justice, and respect for diverse perspectives and backgrounds
Capacity to address the developmental needs of academically motivated middleschool students
Passion and skill to contribute positively to an educational environment thatsupports a lifelong love of learning, identity, self-esteem, and respect for thecommunity and the world in which we live
