About Burke Mountain Academy
Founded in 1970, Burke Mountain Academy is a private, college preparatory ski academy with a 30-acre campus on Burke Mountain. The school enrolls roughly 65 students in grades 8-12 and all students are competitive ski racers who balance a rigorous athletic and academic schedule. The school also hosts a thriving junior program as well as two post-graduate programs and has a relationship with an alpine ski racing program in Oslo, Norway. Each year, the size of the graduating class ranges between 15 to 20 students. Female/male enrollment is roughly equal and we have a significant cohort of international students.
With small class sizes and an individualized academic environment, Burke Mountain Academy encourages students to pursue lifelong learning. Since its founding, Burke Mountain Academy has provided narrative evaluations in lieu of grades. These are comprehensive, detailed, and candid. Specific attention is given both to academic competencies—particularly critical thinking, written and oral communication, and problem-solving—as well as character, such as collaborative abilities, self-direction, leadership, self-awareness, responsibility, curiosity and passion. We are in n
...o way a “pass/fail” institution and we are reminded often by the lifelong success of our alumni that our evaluations incentivize a wider range of desirable characteristics than grades do. Additionally, we believe a community that promotes trust, respect, and responsibility over simply enforcing a set of rules provides the best environment for young people to flourish. This strong sense of community sets us apart from other institutions and it is present in everything we do.
The adults who find happiness at Burke Mountain Academy are those who are willing to learn how our school is a bit different and become outstanding team players within this special context. We have loads of time to enjoy ourselves here—it is a high priority for all of us—but there are also plenty of moments when the call goes out for all hands on deck. Given that Burke Mountain Academy is located on Burke Mountain, you will have almost daily opportunities to enjoy alpine or Nordic skiing in the winter, as well as a range of other snow sports, and we are adjacent to Kingdom Trails, a world-class network of mountain biking trails. Many of our staff and faculty also enjoy the ample access to boating and kayaking, hunting, hiking, and our high performance fitness center. Looking a bit further afield, East Burke is approximately 1.5 hours east of Burlington, Vermont, 2 hours south of Montreal, Canada, and 3 hours north of Boston, Massachusetts. If you love being active and outdoors, you will never want for options at Burke Mountain Academy.
