Position Purpose: Our Librarian should work with our Head Librarian in all aspects of the library program in creating and promoting a student-centered culture in which the library is an inviting, service-oriented space for students and faculty. Students should be empowered to be enthusiastic readers, critical thinkers, researchers and ethical users of gathered information. We value a librarian who will ensure that our collection represents a diverse and multicultural range of authors and topics.
Instruction and Collaboration:
- Provide guidance to students and faculty in information retrieval, effective searching, and evaluation of information and bibliographic attribution
- Collaborate with faculty to design instruction in information literacy including all steps of the Research Model
- Assist faculty in the teaching and assessment of the research process
- Promote reading and the intellectual pursuit of personal interests through book talks, reader’s advisory, and general library interaction with patrons
- Provide guidance and point of service assistance to students and faculty in the use of various instructional technology applications
- Discuss and plan with faculty for research projects
- Solicit suggestions and requests from faculty for resources
- Plan and design lessons with faculty
- Provide collections (may include print and electronic resources) for classroom and/or
library use in support of specific units
- Discuss and plan with faculty instructional technology incorporation within lessons
- Advisory with grade level responsibilities
Administrative Duties:
- Update and revise library pages within the school’s learning management system
- Maintain a professional relationship with the librarians of the lower and upper schools
- Assist in the maintenance of the library facility, including the maintenance of an inviting, clean and orderly, library atmosphere
- Assist in maintaining the periodical collection – processing, display and filing
- Assist in maintaining the library printer – including assistance to patrons in use of the printer and the monitoring and ordering of supplies
- Generate materials’ displays to promote reading and the collection
Professional & Promotional Responsibilities:
- Curate Resource Lists
- Create and submit to Head Librarian all proposed purchases for collection development
- Coordinate with vendor, parent volunteers, classroom teachers, and Head Librarian the annual school book fair
- Collaborate with Diversity team and Head Librarian to provide guest author experiences
- Work with Head Librarian to maintain collection through systemic weeding and development
- Attend conferences, workshops, and classes
- Maintain membership in relevant professional organizations
- Promote the library, its programs and resources throughout the school community and when applicable, in the broader community.
Circulation:
Circulation Desk:
- Assist in assuring a ready-to-serve status during operational hours.
- The library is available to patrons (with limited exceptions) between the hours of 7:30 AM and 4:00 PM. Librarians should staff the main library floor throughout the entire school day. Library Desk Schedules include only the minimum four periods of a librarian’s designated time. The balance of the daily schedule is flexible for additional instruction and library related tasks and responsibilities
- Responsibilities outside of the library may include, but are not limited to Grade Level, Team, Interdisciplinary, and other required faculty meetings and lunch duties, support of extra-curricular activities is encouraged for all faculty. This may result in limited time away from the library.
- On average, librarians spend three quarters or more of the school day in the library in support of library patrons and library programs.
- Assist in processing new materials
- Prepare and deliver library notices
- Assist in preparing and maintaining reserve collections as requested by faculty (these may include print and electronic resources and may be held in the library or delivered to a classroom).
Maintenance of the Collections and the Facility:
- Identify and submit potential acquisitions of appropriate and diverse materials in all formats
- Assist in cataloging and processing of materials
- Assist in inventory of collections
- Foster a library environment which provides intellectual and physical access to all materials within an inviting, conducive to learning, clean and orderly environment
Volunteers:
- Assist in the training and monitoring of parent volunteers
Qualifications:
- A Master’s degree in Library Sciences or Media Education, or equivalent work experience
- Strong IT skills and mastery of library management systems
- Enthusiasm for continual changes in the fields of education and library and information sciences
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with diverse faculty and student populations.
