Deerfield Academy, a private coeducational boarding school founded in 1797 and annually serving approximately 650 students grades 9-12, seeks a Head Varsity Field Hockey Coach with a start date in July 2025.
Responsibilities:
The Head Varsity Field Hockey Coach is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Field Hockey program, including, but not limited to: supervision and instruction of varsity student-athletes during practices and games; working with athletics staff on the development of practice and competition schedules, promotion of the program (social media, website, etc.), management and development of program staff, and monitoring of student-athlete health and wellness; working with our admissions team to recruit student-athletes to the school; and working with student-athletes, their families, and our college advising team on college placement.
This position will be part of a larger full-time teaching role at The Academy, with the specific teaching department dependent on existing or projected Academy needs and the successful candidate's area of academic expertise. Beyond teaching and coaching duties, other responsibilities will include leading an additional co-curricular activity, dormitory residence or supervision, advising, committee work, and family-style dining hall meals with students. Faculty also have opportunities to design and lead domestic and international travel programs.
Qualifications:
We are looking for candidates who exhibit excellence on the field and in the classroom and who can help develop in students the fundamental learning traits outlined in The Deerfield Student and A Framework For Schools. Beyond the field and the classroom, candidates must be prepared to fully engage in the activities and less formal spaces that help define a strong residential educational community. Additionally, candidates for this position will possess the following specific attributes/qualifications:
Previous field hockey coaching experience at the high school, club, or collegiate level
Previous experience as a classroom teacher or in a similar role.
Candidates with expertise in any academic field will be seriously considered; those with subject knowledge in [existing or projected openings] will complement current or projected Academy needs.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Canvas Learning Management System, and other basic classroom technologies
Interest in and demonstrated skill working with adolescents
Demonstrated multicultural competency and commitment to inclusivity
Excitement for continued professional growth
The ability to work with colleagues as part of a team
A sense of humor
Working Conditions:
Close visual acuity to view a computer terminal, analyze text, data and/or figures.
Ability to frequently stand and/or sit for sustained periods of time
Ability to frequently reach items and paperwork
Ability to frequently sustain substantial movements of the wrists, hands and/or fingers
Ability to frequently receive and communicate information, verbally and in writing
Ability to occasionally stoop or kneel
Ability to occasionally lift/carry/push up to 10 pounds
