Fryeburg Academy, a 700-student day and boarding high school located in Western Maine/the Mount Washington Valley, seeks a classroom assistant for the Alternative School beginning in the fall of 2026. This hourly position involves teaching at The Pequawket Valley Alternative School (PVAS) at Fryeburg Academy, which is designed for 3rd and 4th year students who have been unsuccessful in the traditional school setting and whose strengths may not have been reflected in their past school performance. The Alternative School provides these students personalized support and flexible blended learning models of instruction.
Essential Job Functions
Work as directed by the Alternative School teacher to support instruction of a group of 12-16 students
Work school days from 7:45 to 1:45, though the potential exists for this to expand to full-time hours
Knowledge, Skills, Dispositions
A strong belief in independent education, and particularly the mission of Fryeburg Academy
Ability to support an integrated curriculum focusing on the individual learning styles of the students and strongly focused on experiential education
The ability to motivate, support, and challenge students who may not feel good about their past experiences in school
The ability to support students with a range of skills, knowledge, and interests
The ability to work with students from a variety of backgrounds and cultures
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively while maintaining high professional standards
Computer literacy skills
Qualifying Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree preferred but not required
