Hannah Senesh Community Day School, a progressive, independent K-8 Jewish school in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, is hiring a Dean of School Culture and Community to begin July 1, 2023. Competitive salary and benefits; $80-90,000 commensurate with experience.
The Dean of School Culture and Community is a member of the Educational Leadership Team, reports to the Middle School Director, collaborates closely with the Middle School support team, works with all constituents – students, parents, and faculty - in support of the school’s mission and values. The Dean of School Culture and Community is the champion of our core Jewish values, Responsive Classroom, and restorative practices approach in our school. They will ensure our faculty provide a rich, joyful experience where every student learns and grows. The Dean will provide cultural leadership to the teaching staff and oversee the implementation of school-wide systems and procedures. In addition, the Dean of School Culture and Community will partner with the leadership team to ensure that all students have the access and support needed to achieve; with families to ensure a true partnership is built and results in positive outcomes for the student; and with advisors and grade-level teams to ensure we achieve our goals around school culture and establishing a positive, joyful, Jewish learning community.

Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and direction for the Middle School by articulating our mission and core Jewish values with a focus on culture and expectations
- Establish norms and strengthen school wide systems to improve student behavior, culture, and interactions
- Uphold and enhance our DEIJ (diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice) efforts by creating an environment that celebrates and affirms the intrinsic worth and value of all community members
- Lead and manage culture data systems (i.e. attendance, logical consequences), related communication structures, and data-driven action plans to strengthen school and classroom culture
- Observe students and coach faculty on how to manage behaviors through high quality instruction, strong relationships, clear expectations and positive classroom cultures, expectations, and consistency
- Co-lead the student support team and coordinate the efforts of grade-level advisors, ensuring there is proactive programming for community-building and social-emotional learning
- Meet with families to discuss student progress and behavior growth plans, and support teachers in building positive relationships and communications with parents/guardians regarding student conduct
- Serve as the point person for responding to student behavioral issues
- Mediate student-student and student-teacher issues, including communication and meetings with students, parent/guardians, and teachers
- Support conflict resolution through a reflective problem-solving model in partnership with students, faculty, and families
- Coordinate middle school overnight trips
- Co-teach middle school health units
Qualifications
- A dynamic, warm, relationship-oriented leader who is able to motivate, inspire, and support faculty, students, and staff
- Experience and enthusiasm for working with middle school students
- Advanced degree in education, psychology, or related field
- Commitment to and experience in creating a culture rooted in Jewish values
- Training or strong interest in SEL, Response Classroom and/or restorative practices
- Significant experience in DEIJ (diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice) training and implementation
- Experience coaching teachers in creating positive classroom culture
- Ability to navigate challenging moments with flexibility, patience, and a sense of humor
- Ability to develop positive and collaborative working relationships with students, parents/guardians, faculty, and staff
- Strong skills in communication, organization, deep listening, long-range planning, and program implementation
- Capacity to build and improve school systems for greater efficiency and effectiveness
